7. What can Museums do when ‘our house is on fire?’
Shift to CARE for people,
places and planet:
• Educate & alert people
to danger?
• Create safer places and
care for those affected,
including other species?
• Overhaul the whole
system to stop causes
of the crisis?

12. Remembrance Day for Lost Species

Annual remembrance
day - a chance each
year to explore the
stories of extinct and
critically endangered
species, cultures,
lifeways, and
ecological
communities.
14. Challenges
• CIC: have to be non-political, have to be for good of
community
• Distributed model: common cause & brand for a team of
individuals with different passions & experiences, working in
different contexts
• The Earth Crisis! New context will continue to shock as
events unfold
• The dominant system is geared to suppress attempts to
dismantle it. So how do we support each other?
Editor's Notes
What kinds of leadership do museums and cultural organisations need in a time of Climate and Ecological Emergency, or Earth crisis for short? I’m arguing for a new ethics of leadership, and new concepts of the purpose of culture, which draw on feminism and ecological ways of being. These can help create the conditions for organisations and communities to face the full register of challenges of the Earth crisis. In general terms, not just for museums, these challenges require much more than technical solutions, but they are fundamentally about
building resilience or being ‘anti-fragile’,
growing compassion and
changing our cultures from extractivism to ecocentricity.
Museums are used to caring. Museums care for collections. But we have to rethink caring for culture for posterity as key purpose of culture
But what when posterity is threatened?
Shift to CARE for people, places and planet:
Stop causes of crisis?
Alert people to danger?
Create a safer world and care for those affected?
Overhaul the whole system?
In 2018 I decided to try creating a museum that could model this
Anticipating and imagining what will happen
Helping make concrete the solutions, to show what we have to do
Caring
Key point is that we’re more of a team of different people, than a museum in the traditional sense, although we are collecting…
I helped to found CDE – building a community working for a just, regenerative culture
Taking part in action weeks or remembrance days etc. Growing care for all beings, beyond humans, beyond humans like your own kind
