Reframing the Meaning of Job Loss

One way of looking at the realities of job loss is to see it as a rite of passage, the movement from one phase of our lives to another. Our forebears, and those who belong to indigenous societies understand the importance of major life events, and the way that human beings come to terms with them. They understand that there is a three stage process that is involved in the a major change in the identity of a human being like a job loss, and they use ritual to integrate the change into the psyche, and to adapt to a new reality. We could call this an archetypal process.

Reframing the Meaning of Job Loss

  1. 1. Reframing (Re-Mythologizing) the Meaning of Employment Transition ~Brian Collinson Registered Psychotherapist & Jungian Analyst
  2. 2. Job Loss as a Rite of Passage Rites of Passage have 3 stages: ● Death to an Old Identity ● Liminal or “In Between” Stage ● Re-Birth or Resurrection
  3. 3. Death to the Old Identity ● “Who I was then, is no more!” ● Grief, sorrow, and MOURNING ● What in my old identity needed to die? Acknowledging the death of the old work identity, and taking the steps to really feel, and let in the shock and pain of loss.
  4. 4. Liminal or “In Between” Stage ● If at all possible, important to let this time unfold ● Genuinely look at yourself, with compassion ● WIthout pushing, discern: What is trying to emerge? The “in-between” stage between the loss of the old identity, & the emergence of a new one.
  5. 5. Renewal & Rebirth ● A new, broader sense of identity ● Identity beyond the work role ● Affirming my individuality ● My own priorities, not those of the collective
