  63. 63. 63 AND CALLS FOR GUN REFORM AND AN NRA BOYCOTT
  64. 64. 64 EUROPEAN CONSUMERS ARE READY TO ACT… • ...they just need to be pointed in the right direction and feel they are part of something bigger. • Up until now, the gun debate in the US has been seen as an American issue, when in reality most of Europe agrees with strict gun control. • A grasstops campaign could allow Europeans to send a message to US business affiliated to the NRA : • “Gun control is not an American issue, it is a global issue. If the US political system is broken, we – European consumers – can work around it by ’voting’ with our wallets. We will boycott NRA-affiliated companies to show them that their choices have implications beyond the borders of the US.”
  65. 65. 65 A POSSIBLE APPROACH: AMERICAN EXPATS ABROAD CONVEY A MESSAGE TO THEIR HOST COUNTRY ON SOCIAL • Leveraging like-minded American expat groups like Democrats Abroad, we could prompt American expats to make to-camera videos to post on social media in which they plea for the help of their host countries. • For example, Sarah, an American in Paris would make a video in French to say the following: • “I’m Sarah, I am and American who’s lived in Paris for 6 years. Today I want to ask for the help of the French people. As you may know, my country has struggled to deal with the problem of gun violence. Our political system has become beholden to the NRA – a group of gun manufacturers who use their political connections to keep meaningful gun reform from happening. A number of multinational companies – many of which are active in France – also support the NRA through various partnerships. • I want your help in telling these companies such as X, Y and Z, that this is not ok. That gun violence is not an American issue, but a global issue. And even if you as a French person can’t vote in a US election to change laws, you CAN vote with your wallet by boycotting these companies.
  66. 66. SO HOW DO WE DO IT?
  67. 67. DO YOUR RESEARCH.
  68. 68. FIND YOUR AUDIENCE.
  69. 69. DEVELOP YOUR ACE IDEA.
  70. 70. TRY, FAIL . TRY AGAIN.
