Brainum Case Study Botlek Tank Terminal (BTT)

  1. 1. Frank de Leng, BTT’s Terminal Manager, has a full focus on driving the efficiency of his terminal. Six years ago the terminal was set up, and from the start Frank worked with QINO to automate the core processes. Botlek Tank Terminal is using all QINO modules, supporting the major terminal processes, including customs management. Frank de Leng shares his experience in automating the Botlek Tank Terminal with QINO, supplied by Brainum. Clear support of full terminal operations, from HR to customs CASESTUDY Started up with QINO from Brainum Botlek Tank Terminal (BTT) transformed itself six years ago from a grain silo to a tank terminal. From the start Brainum was there to support business with QINO. “QINO is the only dedicated software designed exclusively for tank terminal management that offers fully integrated operational support,” says Frank. “There might be better systems to serve just a single process, but they do not work together like the QINO modules do. I get clear instant insight in all terminal data, so I can make informed decisions and plan ahead to improve efficiency and profitability.” Botlek Tank Terminal B.V. Botlek Tank Terminal (BTT) is an independent tank terminal for storage and discharge of liquid bulk products at the port of Rotterdam. BTT has a state-of-the-art terminal with ample deepwater berths and facilities for the transshipment and storage of a wide range of liquid bulk products. The 420-metre sea jetty is capable of handling two seagoing vessels of up to 115,000 DWT and two tank barges simultaneously. BTT also offers possibilities for train and truck loading. The existing terminal, consisting of 34 storage tanks with a combined capacity of 200,000 m3, is one of the most environment-friendly tank terminals in the world. The reclaimed site will allow BTT to expand storage capacity substantially, probably in one or more phases, to a maximum of 750,000 m3. www.btt-rotterdam.nl Frank de Leng - Terminal Manager Botlek Tank Terminal BV
  2. 2. Instant insight and customs management The main objective of Frank de Leng is to continuously improve the efficiency of the Botlek Tank Terminal. In his experience, it used to be a challenge to get a clear view on everything happening around the tank terminal. Employees carried little notebooks around with them. Decisions were made in the CC without having a clear view on the actual situation at the terminal. “For me, it was hard to collect data from people and paper, making it even harder to forecast. Arrivals or availability of transport, storage or product could come as a surprise. Planning was a nightmare.” De Leng says: “Now with QINO I have real-time insight in order-to- cash, maintenance, alerts, incidents, HR and KPI’s, giving me time to analyse, plan and improve. This is very helpful to answer the frequent and detailed questions of stakeholders, customer and auditors.” A good example is QINO’s interface with Customs. QINO is integrated with Descartes’ Customs Warehouse Management (CWM). Product orders are now automatically transferred to customs. This saves time in administration. Furthermore customs personnel does not need to be around at odd hours. It speeds up clearance, offloading and departures, and minimizes human errors. With an AEO status BTT is happy to have this process automated, and so are the customs authorities. This makes GPA reporting more stable: a gain for everybody.
