This story opens with the question “Ready?” What are the characters getting ready for?
2. How long has Margot lived on Venus?
5. In what way have the children’s feelings changed by the time they release Margo from the closet?
The Ideas in the Story (Answer in Paragraph form) 5 points each.
1. The main idea in this story has something to do with why people are sometimes cruel to each other. The author says the children hated Margot for “all these reasons of big and little consequence. They hated her pale snow face, her waiting silence, her thinness and her possible future….”
Write a paragraph telling which of these reasons you think are of “big consequences” and which are of “little consequences.”
2. Do you think that the children as a group would have treated Margot as they did if there had not been so many against one? What has your own experience concerning group behaviors versus individual behaviors? Write a paragraph describing your experience.
3. We are told that Margot’s parents are considering taking her back to Earth next year: “it seemed vital to her that they do so,” but it will be at a cost of thousands of dollars to her family." What is the cost to Margot if her family stays?
4. Consider how the other children are being deprived because of their life on Venus and how they, like Margot, will feel their deprivation now that they know what sunshine is like. Which do you think is more important, the parent's careers or their daughter’s well-being?
5. What is your view of similar conflicts that parents and children in our society must face?
Spelling and Grammar always count.
