The full name for the REM sleep disorder isREM Sleep Behaviour Disorder and its a sleep disorder where anindividual acts out their dreams while sleeping. REM, which stands forrapid eye movement, is so called because of the fast back and forthmovement of a sleepers eyes underneath their eyelids while they are in thisstage of sleep. Its during this stage of sleep, called REM sleep, thatdreaming occurs. Therefore, its also during this stage of sleep thatsymptoms of this R.E.M. sleep disorder present themselves. Thesesymptoms are physical in nature and can turn violent depending on thedream and severity of the disorder.So what are the symptoms of this R.E.M. sleep disorder? Really, there isonly one symptom of REM sleep behavior disorder - a loss of muscleparalysis. In normal, healthy sleepers, when they enter the stage of sleepknown as REM sleep, their bodies go into a state of paralysis. Its thisparalysis that stops ahealthy sleeper fromphysically acting out theirdreams, twitching and /or punching and kickingwhile sleeping. Its theopposite for someonesuffering from this REMsleep disorder. Thesepeople can actually injurethemselves or theirpartners while they sleep.They could do this bypunching or kicking whilethey are asleep anddreaming.
