"Supporting Blue Growth with innovative applications based on EU e-infrastructures”, 14-15 February 2018, Brussels Sentinel for aquaculture • Sentinel-1 ESA / EC mission (radar) – 2 satellites launched in 2014 and 2016 C-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data - Independant on light condition and clouds • Preliminary detection of fish cages (Best resolution 10 m) • Sentinel- 2 ESA / EC mission (optical) - 2 satellites launched in 2015 and end 2017 Prime objectives : Land monitoring and coastal zones (25 km off the shore) • Preliminary detection of fish cages, shrimp farms or seaweed parcel (Best spatial resolution 10 m) • Adequate for High Resolution inland and coastal water quality index (Sediment, Chlorophyll…) • Sentinel – 3 ESA / EC mission (not demonstrated in BlueBridge) - S3A launched in 2016 • Prime objective of ocean monitoring, several sensors and applications: oceanography, water quality and SST • Real Time monitoring of oceanographic conditions and water quality close to aquaculture farms, help aquaculture site selection 15/02/2018 3
  4. 4. "Supporting Blue Growth with innovative applications based on EU e-infrastructures”, 14-15 February 2018, Brussels The “Aquaculture Atlas Production System” (AAPS) VRE: A Copernicus downstream service • How it works?: • Process Earth Observation/ Copernicus products as input • Explore automatic methods for detection of aquaculture features • Store derived products in the BlueBridge infrastructure for collaborative exploitation • Display and update online via a web-app hosted in the VRE • Support demonstrations on selected areas • Fish cage detection and characterization in Greece and Malta, based mostly on VHR optical images (*) • Coastal Ponds detection and characterization in Sulawesi (Indonesia), based on S-1, S-2 (*) In BlueBridge R&D context : High resolution basemap image from MICROSOFT Bing, Google Earth or Here WeGo (ex Nokia). Bing derived products shall be disseminated under Open Database License 15/02/2018 4

  6. 6. "Supporting Blue Growth with innovative applications based on EU e-infrastructures”, 14-15 February 2018, Brussels Indonesian study case • Challenge: Detection of aquaculture coastal ponds in Sulawesi • How? • Detection of permanent water bodies using multispectral optical satellite • Problem of revisit due to cloud cover, time series may not be able to discriminate permanent/seasonal/temporal water bodies • Ambiguities due to flooded rice paddy field solved by radar imagery • SAR insensitive to cloud/night condition, no problem of revisit • SAR signal sensitive to rice growth • 64 Sentinel-1 images available from 12/2014 to 01/2017 15/02/2018 6

  8. 8. "Supporting Blue Growth with innovative applications based on EU e-infrastructures”, 14-15 February 2018, Brussels Rice paddy vs. Coastal pond: Copernicus S-1 solution • Collect in situ information (via Google) • Look at temporal variations of the radar backscattering over these selected locations • Use these variations as input of a dedicated classifier Series of S-1 images 15/02/2018 8
  9. 9. "Supporting Blue Growth with innovative applications based on EU e-infrastructures”, 14-15 February 2018, Brussels Greece/Malta study case • Challenge: Detection of aquaculture fish farms in Greece and Malta • How: • Detection feasible in certain cases with Copernicus imagery, but no characterization feasible (limitation due to medium resolution) • With high resolution optical images • Need software and dedicated algorithm to perform such task -> ACUITY Image from Microsoft Bing Aerial – Derived products will be available under the Open Database Licence © Open Street Map 15/02/2018 9
  10. 10. "Supporting Blue Growth with innovative applications based on EU e-infrastructures”, 14-15 February 2018, Brussels Solution for Greece/Malta use case study: semi-supervised algorithm • Acuity: • A GIS plateform developed by CLS with capacity for EO ingestion, ancillary data integration, simplified and intuitive tools for annotation of features • A new version available dedicatedly tuned for the aquaculture sector • Simple to use, efficient and adapted to the sector needs. • How it works • Step 1: Region of Interest selection • Step 2: Automatic fish cage detection • Dedicated algorithms implemented to detect circular (flexible) and square (rigid) floating fish cages • Step 3: eventually manual editing • Dedicated tools implemented to handle geospatial vectorial information – simple to use (compared to GIS software), dedicated to aquaculture features • Step 4: ontology description • An ontology can be proposed depending on context, aquaculture features, input EO images 1015/02/2018
