Overview of current courses and scopes Computer Engineers • 1 course (20h) per year in the PhD in Computer Engineering at Univ. of Pisa Biologists/Oceanographers • At University of Paris (Sorbonne) - Pierre and Marie Curie (UPMC) Paris (Master deg.s in Systématique, Evolution et Paléontologie, Oceanography and Marine Environment) - Villefranche-sur-mer (Oceanography and Marine Environment) Scopes • The course gives students an overview of the models, the practices and the methods that large international organizations like FAO and UNESCO apply by means of D4Science. • introduces students to the basic concepts under e- Infrastructures, Virtual Research Environments, data sharing and experiments reproducibility. • Presents best practices in stock assessment, biodiversity conservation and ecology

Current teaching approach Lecture-style: the course topics stress is different depending on the audience Interactive: after each explained topic, students do experiments Experimental: students reproduce the experiment shown by the teacher and possibly repeat it on their own data Social: students communicate via messaging or VRE discussion panel
  17. 17. Method 1. The teacher shares a folder through the Workspace and makes Training material available 2. Students join the same Virtual Research Environment 3. Students produce data and upload them in a folder on the Workspace they share with the teacher 4. Uploaded data are notified to the teacher and represent certification that the students have worked correctly 5. Final tests are done using the same approach

Policies No use e-Infrastructure contributors proprietary data and software: stock assessment data, Geospatial layers, species occurrences Use of public data produced by BlueBRIDGE and shared by other users: AquaMaps, niche models, trained statistical models, environmental data Use of publicly available information only with proper citation: GBIF, OBIS, Catalog of Life, Marine Regions, Copernicus with proper citation Students can bring their own data and decide to give them restricted access
