  7. 7. 7 Exterior Grade Phenolic Panels Generic classification: Solid Phenolic Strengths: • Wide range of decors • Variety of large panel sizes • Hi-design capabilities • High level of impact, weathering and UV resistance • Graffiti resistance • Self cleaning (non-porous) • Maintenance and cleaning • Ability to field modify • Ability to incorporate digital graphics into panels • Sustainability/Environment • Warranty
  8. 8. History of Phenolic Products • “Phenolic resins—100 years of progress and their future” • Kazuhisa Hirano, Masakatsu Asami Authors • 1911 First Developments Japan • strength, heat-resistance, long-term reliability and cost, and therefore have been used in a wide range of applications from kitchen parts to components for electronic appliances and automobiles. • Tradename Bakelite • Formica replaced ‘mica’ for insulating items in electrical components • Discovered durability, lead to other uses: automotive, aerospace, construction etc. • 60 years making panels 8
  9. 9. 9 Perceptions we’ve heard Surface vulnerable to impact, graffiti, other damage Panel can delaminate Panel vulnerable to water and freeze/thaw action Hard to install Costly Poor sustainability Facts Surface harder than metals, FRC, Ceramics and cleanable with common acetone. Material all one homogenous material after pressure and temperature process On buildings from Siberia to South of India Common ventilated façade installation; easy fabrication, cutting, drilling – high yields Easy to ship in bulk, low cost manufacturing at volume, very competitive to Architectural façade choices 65% of product is wood fibre, harvested as a crop from managed FSC forests. Dust is not toxic to workers. Scraps are sources of energy
  10. 10. Standards and Certifications – ask about them, specify them • EN 438 • Tests for colour fastness • HPD and EPD • International Building Code and it’s references • ASTM D 1037 ASTM G 23, 26, 152 – Accelerated Weathering • ASTM B 117 - salt ASTM G 155 • ASTM D 2247 - water Freeze thaw • ASTM E 330 • Certificate of long term performance – 30 year test. • QC program with audit by ICC-ES. • Cleaning and chemical resistance protocol • LEED Contributes to MR Credit 6 and 7. Subsystems MR Credit 5.1. • Florida Building Code Approvals. Hail Testing. 10
  11. 11. 11 **Canadian Testing for CAN ULC S134; S102
  12. 12. Environment (EPD) • Source material – 67% natural fibres • FSC wood fibre • Byproduct of wood industry – one type of wood • Production – ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 – independent annual inspectors. • Exhaust air heat captured and reused • Best practice award • Fire protection certified. • Fabrication • Many sizes, easy to optimize use and avoid scrap • Dust not toxic • Construction • Light, handling easy with limited use of equipment 12 Resilience Certified lifespan over 50 years No maintenance required, cleaning easy. Good for high traffic areas – no marks, no dents, clean graffiti and dirt easily Recyclable In Factory offcuts recycled. No toxins or heavy metal. Subsystems often recycled steel, aluminum or wood Reusable Easy to remove and re-install elsewhere. Subsystems reusable.

  16. 16. FunderMax UV • Acrylic PUV impregnate not film; • Double cured = double strength, durability • Competitor put a sheet on top and bottom • Trespa Meteon is EBC: not bad, but not as good • Patterns and wood use film – can scratch film off, can power wash film off. Look of pattern is different • We have have 100 micron resistance, they have 20 vs EBC • Other HPL – use films 16

  32. 32. 32 HPL has a hardened, non-porous surface, which is easy to clean. Graffiti can be cleaned off with acetone or other simple cleaners quickly and easily, before others want to do the add their marks. Road salts and other contaminants are easily removed from HPL Compact surfaces. HPL Compact boasts a robust surface that is difficult to cut, chip, mar, or damaged by blunt impact. A steel stud wall can begin the day the contract is offered to the framer. The building can be closed in using industry standard commodities. Cladding companies purchase HPL Compact as their contract is awarded. Once shop drawings are approved, the cladding contractor can begin installing HPL Compact panels, regardless of weather conditions. Precast, on the other hand, is forced to begin production of the panels after the shop drawings are approved. You wait until their fabrication is complete to close in the building. Admittedly, when they install their wall there is nothing else to do, but none the less, its much later in the construction cycle. A market reality is precast factories are very busy, and they tell you when they can deliver. Its not about your schedule, rather theirs. Precast can alter surface appearance by adding colour, bricks and/or use formliners. FunderMax HPL Compact Max Exterior is delivered in 120 decors ranging from bold solid colours, high definition wood grains, realistic stone patterns and designer abstracts in four finishes. It is also available in Individual Décor™, a digital image process offering custom facades that define the building. FunderMax HPL Compact Panels offer façade materials with unlimited design opportunities. While precast has its place in some projects, HPL has a significant value proposition worthy of consideration
