Ridesharing- Van Pooling <ul><li>What is Van Pooling? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A group of 7 - 15 people who commute together on a regular basis in a van. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>How does it work? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Each vanpool has a primary driver/coordinator </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Share cost of the van and all other operating expenses. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Riders usually meet at a designated pick-up location like a shopping center parking lot or a park and ride location. Some vans have more than one pick-up point, some don‘t </li></ul></ul>

Ridesharing- Van Pooling <ul><li>What's the cost? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Because you share the cost with up to 14 other people, vanpooling is typically much less expensive than driving yourself to work. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>In addition, vanpoolers are eligible to receive special Federal tax incentives for vanpooling. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Is vanpooling right for me? If you travel about 15 miles or more one-way to work and have a schedule that's relatively consistent, you're a good prospect! </li></ul>

Ridesharing-How to Find a Ride? <ul><li>A free online service connects commuters looking to share cars, bicycles, taxi, transit or walking trips </li></ul><ul><li>Sharing a ride is not only FUN but it helps preserve air quality, decreases traffic congestion, conserves fuel, promotes better health and saves you money all at the same time! </li></ul><ul><li>DEMO </li></ul>

How to Take Advantage of Commuter Tax Breaks <ul><li>Favorable Tax Treatment </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The employer-provided benefits are treated as tax-free fringes, within limits. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>That means their value won’t be included in employee’s taxable salary. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Therefore, employee will not owe any federal income tax, state income tax (if you have one), Social Security tax, or Medicare tax on the value. </li></ul></ul>

Commuter Tax Benefits <ul><li>How does a company set this up? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Set aside part of employee’s salary - a so-called salary reduction arrangement. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The amount set aside is subtracted from taxable income. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>In effect, the salary reduction arrangement allows employee to pay commuting costs with pretax dollars rather than paying them with what’s left after taxes. </li></ul></ul>

Commuter Tax Benefit: Transit Passes and Van Pooling <ul><li>TRANSIT; Through the end of 2011, employer-provided mass transit passes for train, subway and bus systems are tax free up to a monthly limit of $230 . </li></ul><ul><li>VAN POOLING: Employer-provided van pooling is also tax free up to a monthly limit of $230. </li></ul>

Commuter Tax Benefit: Federal Employees <ul><li>New Benefit for Federal Employees:   All Federal employees are eligible for transit/vanpool benefits now. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>They have to get a form from their HR office and they can receive up to $110 a month to use for transit passes or vanpool fares. </li></ul></ul>

Commuter Tax Benefit: Bicycle Commuting Allowance <ul><li>Employer can give to $20 per month to cover buying, repairing and storing a bicycle that employee regularly uses to commute to work. </li></ul><ul><li>Implement with reimbursement cards </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Simply sign the pledge on the card that states you commuted to work by bike for at least three days per week, and then staple your receipts to the card </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Not allowed to receive the bicycle commuting fringe for any month one receive any tax-free employer-provided transit passes, van pooling or parking allowances. </li></ul><ul><li>Not allowed to use a salary reduction arrangement to pay for bicycle commuting costs with pretax dollars. </li></ul>

Commuter Tax Benefit: Bicycle Commuting Allowance <ul><li>As a rule, the qualified transportation fringe benefit can only be provided by employers to employees. </li></ul><ul><li>Common law employees and officers of corporations are eligible </li></ul><ul><li>Sole proprietors, partners, independent contractors and two-percent shareholders of S corporations are not eligible for this transportation fringe benefit. </li></ul>
