  5. 5. KEO International Consultants Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers Introduction This presentation is divided into two parts. The first part of the presentation briefly discusses climate change, sustainability in the built environment and identifies international environmental targets. The presentation then focuses specifically on the UAE and identifies the requirements for sustainability in the Emirates. A detailed description of the regulations and requirements within Dubai and Abu Dhabi is analyzed. Typical sustainable solutions are considered ending part one. The second part of the presentation looks at a generic cost effective sustainable design process in order to satisfy the regulations and requirements in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Any sustainable design solution requires a complete holistic approach from the entire design team and KEO will demonstrate how to achieve this to ultimately provide the a cost effective sustainable solution which satisfies both regulations and the clients needs.

  7. 7. KEO Internationall Consultants I t ti C lt t Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers Climate Change Climate change and global warming are unequivocally the biggest and most fundamental problems facing planet earth and mankind today. Global warming and climate change are expected to have a cataclysmic effect across the globe. The t l i ff t th l b Th worst effects of climate change can be avoided if greenhouse gases incorporating carbon di id (CO2) in th atmosphere b dioxide i the t h are stabilised instead of being allowed to increase.
  8. 8. KEO International Consultants Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers “To not make the most efficient use of energy in any form of building is an unethical g architectural practise.” The Royal Australian Institute of Architects Sustainability in the Built Environment The term, in its environmental usage, refers to the potential longevity of vital human ecological support systems, such as the planet's climatic system, systems of agriculture, industry, forestry, fisheries, and the systems on which they depend. In recent years, public discourse has led to a use of "sustainability" in reference to how long human ecological systems can be expected to be usefully productive productive.
  9. 9. KEO International Consultants Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers Green Building Green building is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings use resources such as energy, water and materials whilst reducing building impacts on human health and the environment. This is achieved through sustainable design, construction, operation and design construction maintenance. One of the main factors to consider is energy consumption which in turn produces CO2 and ti hi h i t d d contributes to climate change. Reducing the energy consumption can help curtail climate change activities activities.
  10. 10. KEO International Consultants Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers Environmental Target
  11. 11. Environmental Targets Kyoto Protocol Cut overall emissions of greenhouse gases by 5.2% below 1990 levels by 2008-2012 United Arab Emirates (UAE) Signed up to the KP and have ratified their commitment on the 26/01/05. The UAE is a member of the G77 and subsequently does not have any reduction targets as the UAE is considered a de eloping co ntr developing country. KEO International Consultants Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers USGBC, EHS, USGBC EHS TECOM & EGBC USGBC: The United States Green Building Council currently control the LEED certification process for p j p projects in Dubai. TECOM: Sustainable Energy and Environment Division (SEED). Sustainable Development Policy, SEED launched a comprehensive energy conservation programme in April 2007 by optimizing the operations of electro-mechanical equipment at facilities owned by TECOM TECOM. EHS: have just announced regulations for a LEED assessment on all projects in JAFZ EGBC: EGBC The Emirates Green B ilding Co ncil is currently re ie ing LEED credits and Building Council c rrentl reviewing have adjusted the credits to suit the Middle East construction industry and climate conditions. Pilot version 1 has been released.

KEO International Consultants Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers Dubai M i i li Regulations D b i Municipality R l i Dubai Municipality Circular 161: Dubai Municipality released Circular 161 in April 2008 which requires buildings to be sustainable with respect to, five sections namely; q g p , y; • Energy, • Environment and Internal Air, • Water, • Lighting and • Control Systems Dubai Municipality New Regulations: WSP are currently writing the new regulations for Dubai Municipality. It was widely anticipated these regulations were to be available in January 2009 but there release has been extended.

  20. 20. KEO International Consultants Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers Solar Collectors Solar Collector systems normally operate with a back up source of heat such as gas back-up heat, or electricity. The solar system pre-heats the water up to the required hot water supply temperature. In the Middle East these systems generally negate the need for primary supplies hence reduce the building energy consumption. consumption

KEO International Consultants Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers Photovoltaic Panels Photovoltaic Ph t lt i (PV) modules convert sunlight di tl into DC electricity f use iin buildings th d l t li ht directly i t l t i it for b ildi thus reducing the primary energy demand. PV is distinct from other renewable energy technologies because it has no moving parts and is silent. PV systems can be incorporated on to buildings in various ways; on sloped roofs and flat roofs, in facades etc. y ; p ,

KEO International Consultants Architects, Engineers, Project & Construction Managers Wind Turbines Wind turbines generate electricity and can b iinstalled on/in b ildi Wi d t bi t l t i it d be t ll d /i buildings, th electricity the l t i it generated can be utilised by the building thus reducing the primary power requirements. Turbines normally connect in parallel to the building and national grid. Excess electricity is normally placed onto the grid and then drawn back later later.
