Travel, Communication and Interconnection

  1. 1. BIG HISTORY PROJECT / LESSON 8.1 TRAVEL, COMMUNICATION, & INTERCONNECTION What is an interconnected world? One definition of an interconnected world is one in which travel and communication take place very rapidly and over long distances. There have been many times in history when pow- erful civilizations have been able to move people and information quickly over long distances. The Persians, Romans, and Mongols, for example, valued roads and fast communication and developed efficient systems for both. However, these innovations often didn’t last once the empire fell. In the last few hundred years, dramatic changes have occurred in the speed of transportation and communication, and each of these innovations has given rise to further innovations. Speeds of travel and communication continue to improve. Work with your partner to fill in the chart on travel across the US, travel across the Atlantic, and communication across the Atlantic between 1700 and 2000. Identify the technologies that would have been most important in facil- itating transportation and communication during this time period. Once you have finished, your teacher may ask you to share some of your group’s ideas with the class.
