Simplify and make your
datacenter change-ready with
Virtual Connect
• Simplify networks
− Reduce cables without adding switches to manage
• Simplify server connections
− Cleanly separate server enclosure from LAN and SAN
• Change servers in minutes, not days
− Add, move, and replace servers fast without affecting
your LANs or SANs
11
Server-Edge Virtualization
pools all servers as one
Virtual Connect solves these
& makes IT change-ready

•Reduces cables w/o adding switches
No new FC domains!
•Maintains end-to-end connections
of your favorite brands
(Cisco, BNT, Brocade, McData, etc.)
•Cleanly separates mgt of Server, LAN & SAN
•Relieves LAN & SAN admins from
server maintenance w/o affecting their authority
(their work is done after deployment)
•Servers are Change-Ready - add, move,
replace, upgrade w/o affecting LAN or SAN
•MAC & WWN are locally administered so
LAN & SAN connections stay constant

Editor's Notes

  1. ProLiant Onboard Administrator is management functionality that simplifies server setup, health monitoring, power and thermal control, and remote administration of ProLiant ML, DL, and BL servers. ProLiant Onboard Administrator functions without additional software and functionality can be accessed local to the server or remotely via a web browser. Simplified server setup: Deploying a server involves configuration of the hardware as well as deployment of OS and application images. ProLiant Onboard Administrator makes it possible for tools from HP, such as Insight Control suite, and other leading systems management vendors to automate the configuration of HP hardware including boot order, RAID configuration, and network configuration. Extended embedded health: With ProLiant Onboard Administrator, it is possible to inspect server health from any location whether the server is on or off, whether the operating system is running or offline. View system configuration and component health as well as integrated management logs with no additional software. Launch the ProLiant Onboard Administrator web interface from HP System Insight Manager from the management processor status column or system page. Power & Thermal Control: ProLiant Onboard Administrator constantly monitors server power usage and enforces power efficiency and power cap settings. This enables Insight Control suite to monitor and control power across the data center, helping customers understand how much power their servers are consuming, driving enhanced energy efficiency through power supply control and processor p-states regulation, and maximizing utilization of power and cooling capacity with Dynamic Power Capping. Dynamic Power Capping, delivered through ProLiant Onboard Administrator, is the only solution in the industry capable of capping power at sub-second intervals and protecting electrical infrastructure from unexpected increases in power consumption. Power supply high efficiency mode, allows end users to run power supplies in non-redundant and increase power supply efficiency by turning off redundant supplies. Advanced power and thermal control capabilities are enabled via the iLO Advanced license. iLO Remote Administration: iLO Remote Administration allows customers to take control of their server from any location, saving thousands of dollars on travel and unplanned downtime costs. Extend the functionality of ProLiant Onboard Administrator with iLO Advanced and iLO Advanced for BladeSystem for features like multi-user collaboration, console record and replay, virtual folders, and other industry leading remote administration capabilities.

  3. To manage Virtual Connect infrastructures HP provides options for both small and large Virtual Connect environments. Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager is HP’s primary application for managing Virtual Connect environments. It provides centralized management for up to 200 Virtual Connect domains with the VCEM v1.30 release, administers 128,000 LAN and SAN addresses from a central pool, and is ideal for multiple rack or distributed BladeSystem environments with more than one rack of enclosures and with plans to expand. VCEM is designed to scale as the infrastructure grows and simplifies the addition of new and even-bare metal enclosures …. customers in this category should use VCEM from the very beginning to get the most benefit. In contrast, Virtual Connect Manager is a simple web console built into the firmware of Virtual Connect Ethernet modules, and is designed to configure and manage a single Virtual Connect domain with up to 16 servers. This option is ideal for environments with up to 4 enclosures that have no plans to expand further.
