Natural Ingredient Case Study - Is your Garlic Oil Natural?
Beta Analytic recently published the disconcerting results of a study that focused on the
source and chemical composition of five garlic oil products available in the market, four
of which were labeled as "100% pure garlic essential oil" and one artificial garlic oil.
Through the use of carbon-14 analysis, the lab demonstrated that only one of the four
products labeled as 100% pure garlic oil originated wholly from natural sources, despi-
te all samples having passed a GC-MS chemical composition test for garlic oil.
These results come as no surprise to food manufacturers and F&F companies who are
well aware that adulteration and mislabeling of "natural" ingredients in the market is a
real concern and use laboratory testing to verify claims before risking their brand name
and bottom line.
