“When Language Dies, Culture Dies Too”. - Jürgen Trabant
I. Language, Culture, and Thought
a. Language: Code and Social Practice
In a narrow sense, language is seen as a code which is made up of words and sets of
rules that link words together. However, in a broader sense, language is, according to Shohamy
(2007), “open, dynamic, energetic, constantly, evolving, and personal.’ It encompasses the rich
complexities of communication. Therefore, it is also a social practice of meaning-making and
interpretation (Scarino and Liddicoat, 2009).
b. Understanding Culture
Culture, like lanuage, is not just a body of knowledge containing artifacts, places and
institutions, events and symbols, and ways of living; it is a framework in which people live their
lives and communicate shared meanings with each other (Sacrino and Liddicoat, 2009).
c. The Relationship between Language and Culture
According to Jones and Lorenzo (2008) , there are four key constructs that underlie the
integral relationship between culture and language,
- Culture defines language, and language is shaped by culture
- Language is a symbol of cultural and personal identity
- Cultural groups have different worldviews based on the shared experiences
that influence their various languages
- Language is the medium by which culture is transmitted from generation to
generation
A language is a part of a culture; the two are intricately interwoven so that one cannot
separate the two without losing the significance of either language or culture. The acquisition of
a second language is also the acquisition of second language is also the acquisition of a second
culture. (Brown, 2000).
