  7. 7. 1/28/2015 6 The Situation • Your audience is watching online content • The Internet is not going to get slower • You (will) need to meet your audience, where they are, and that’s in front of their devices • You need the appropriate infrastructure • Do you have it and what is it? A broadcaster • Current issues: – Run several channels, incoming tapes gradually being replaced by incoming files – Avid edit suites, Avid ISIS online storage – expensive maintenance contracts, running out of storage space – Sales people selling content to multiple platforms e.g. OTT services, cable companies offering on-demand content, different versions of content for channel launches in new territories – Media operations breaking down, multiple silos with own ‘systems’ • The results: – Risk of lost files, or airing content that may not be approved (license/penalties) – Stress, resulting in staff turnover – Costly proprietary systems – Future migration complexity as files are in OP1a proprietary format A transmission company • Current issues: – Run tens of channels for international broadcasters – File ingest, automatic QC, archive, playout but … delivers linear channels only – Increased demand for delivering files to other platforms (just like previous broadcaster) – Increasing demand from clients to offer OTT services as part of playout contracts – 1 developer, overworked, creating an encoding and delivery mechanism for a huge broadcast services company – No demonstrable capability that can be demonstrated • The results: – Client dissatisfaction – Definite loss of revenue – Delivery risk

RFP/purchase/install 5. Appoint and train internal champions Define the strategy #1 • Open standards – reduced cost, increased future options – e.g. LTO , in the UK ‘DPP’, in the USA ‘AMWA” -> AS=11 intl file format for HD files • Future proof – allow interconnection of different vendors, add, take-away … – Enterprise Service Bus and Service Orientated Architecture (*)

  12. 12. 1/28/2015 11 Existing workflows may appear comfortable but could well be risky A single person can present a big challenge so don’t forget change management And, don’t miss the bigger picture
