THINK BACK TO YOUR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE. 1) What was the most ________ comment you ever received on your work? positive useful hurtful confusing 2) How did you respond in this situation? 3) Do you think the words used matched the intention of the person who said them? Why or why not? 4) Discuss your own participation in crits in the past. Did you often feel confident, eager, nervous, or agitated? 5) Have you ever experienced a misunderstanding that led to a tense situation in a crit? What contributed to the tension? How was it resolved?
  3. 3. THINK BACK TO YOUR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE. 6) How much of your past studio groups usually participated in speaking during critiques? What factors do you think accounted for students’ participation? 7) Comment on group dynamics during critiques: what ‘roles’ have you noticed emerging in such situations?
  4. 4. DRAWING ON THE INFORMATION SHARED 1) Are there any commonalities among the situations discussed? What are they? Identify the major issues experienced in crit participation. 2) Consider the role of spoken language in these situations. How could the sentiment expressed have been better articulated? 3) Design a guideline, one to two sentences long, to address language use in each of the major issues identified during the discussion.
