1. 1. Observational Documentaries
 2. 2. Definition

Observational documentaries tend to simply observe, allowing viewers to reach whatever conclusions they like.

In observational documentaries the camera follows the person as the events unfold, you watch it as it happens showing the audience exactly what is happening.

Light equipment is used, like hand held cameras which makes it easier to follow the person and action.

-Hand held cameras are used for location shots -No interviews included -No voiceover -Synchronous sound incorporated -Usually this mode of documentary is used for war documentaries- following the person and seeing the events unfold -Long takes used.

 3. 3. Examples of observational documentaries:

-Big Brother

-Peter Andre: The Next Chapter

-Kerry Katona: The Next Chapter

-What Katie did Next

-The Only Way is Essex

-Made In Chelsea

 5. 5.

‘ Peter Andre: The next chapter’ involves the camera following the celebrity Peter Andre as he goes about his everyday life.

This programme allows the audience to reach whatever conclusion they like about the celebrity, by following him as he carries on his normal life, also it’s not biased.

There isn’t any interviews incorporated in this programme either, making it informal.

Some camera angles in this clip includes:

-Low angle shot

- And an establishing shot

Some of the shots are shaky in this clip because hand held equipment is used so it is lighter and easier to follow the celebrity.

 6. 6. Kerry Katona: The Next Chapter

Similar to ‘Peter Andre: The Next Chapter’, ‘Kerry Katona: The Next Chapter’ also involves the camera following Kerry Katona as she carries on her normal life.

The audience is allowed to create their own opinion on this celebrity and her life, by simply showing how she lives her life and being unbiased.

In this programme the shots are

quite long, as the camera has

just been left to run to capture the action.

 7. 7. What Katie Did Next

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJcNncZr_xE&feature=fvwrel

This is a clip from ‘Katie Price: What Happened Next’

 8. 8.

‘ What Katie Did Next’ shows an insight in to Katie Price’s famous lifestyle.

The camera follows her around, which means light equipment is used, which includes a hand held camera, which makes the shots not as steady.

Interviews are not used in this programme, making it an observational documentary.

In this show there is a voiceover used when the narrator speaks over the clip. Also asynchronous sound.

Lots of different camera angles are used in this clip including:

-Close up

-Establishing shot

-and a two shot
