EEG Biofeedback & the Addicted Brain

  2. 2. EEG BiofeedbackImproving Treatment Effectiveness
  3. 3. What Are Brainwaves?Brainwaves are the sum total of millions of neurons allfiring at once. The number of neurons sparking in thebrain at a certain frequency (speed) conveyinformation that defines the amplitude (or power).Brainwaves are measured in Hertz (waves per second),and have a spectrum of frequencies. Each frequencyspectrum carries a different meaning about emotions, physical movement, concentration, and creativeexpression.
  4. 4. Frequency bandwidths are part of the wholeraw electroencephalograph (EEG) Low Beta (12-15 HZ), aka SMR Beta (15-32 HZ)
  5. 5. Frequency bandwidths are part of the wholeraw electroencephalograph (EEG) Alpha (8-12 HZ) Theta (4-8 HZ) What could I have done better?
  6. 6. Frequency bandwidths are part of the wholeraw electroencephalograph (EEG) Delta (2-5 HZ) Gamma (38-42 HZ)
  7. 7. Brainwaves in Relation to Activity Levels Delta 1-4 HzTheta 4-8 HzAlpha 8-12 HzSMR 12-15 HzBeta 15-32 Hz
  8. 8. EEG Biofeedback, a.k.a. Neurofeedback, is no different than learning how to ride a bike.If a parent explains to a child how to ride abike that child would still not be able to rideone. The mind’s knowledge does not alwaystranslate into information for our brain. Our brain learns from experience, and we dothat with the help of feedback.
  9. 9. In this case, gravity is giving feedback to the brain.
  10. 10. Sometimes tools canassist the learningprocess such as usingtraining wheels.Eventually the braindevelops new neuralconnections, whichtranslates into, “Look, Mom, I can do it!”How does neurofeedbackwork as a tool to teach thebrain new skills?

  13. 13. What Happens During a Session?
  14. 14. Training Brainwave Frequencies BETA/SMR PROTOCOLS HELP: ALPHA/THETA TRAINING ASSISTS:Better focus and concentration Less self-absorbedMore present More open mindedImproves objectivity Less defendedStabilizes mood More connected emotionallyMore calm and relaxed Increase peace and serenity Have more objective observations Access and integrate repressed experiences
  15. 15. How Does EEG biofeedbackApply to Addiction Recovery? • UCLA Addiction Study (n=121) demonstrated that EEG biofeedback complements other treatment modalities to improve retention and the odds for long term sobriety to 77% from 44% • The results from the UCLA Addiction Study has been replicated by other research teams • Addiction Treatment Centers are also witnessing the same results that the UCLA research team concluded.

  18. 18. Why Does EEG biofeedbackApply to Addiction Recovery? • Threats of ongoing recovery to an addicted brain triggers a defensive survival response. • EEG biofeedback trains the brain to avoid this reactive state. • This causes the brain to better integrate the treatment process.
  19. 19. Using Neurofeedback as an AMAearly warning detection methodIf the client’s Alpha brainwave, 8-11Hz,increases during 3 consecutive Alpha Thetasessions, it can be time to do a little investigating...
