Research Objectives
Our Research Objective to find out
the relationship between modern
society and depression
Introduction and the
Review of Literature
Review of Literature
We have googled down this topic Modern
Society Causes Depression and the outcomes
were mixed based on the following facts:
• Financial Difficulties
• Family and Relationship Complexity
• Social Problems
• Technology
Review of Literature
A research conducted by
“The New York Times”
recently is related to our
topic and the findings
are:
Here we find that Lower
Income/Financial
Difficulties is the main
reason causes
depression.
Review of Literature
Another research done by “Gallup Wellbeing” showed a
relation with depression as an illness and its findings
supported the earlier research:
Based on these reviews we have done on the
literature we have narrowed down our
Independent Variable to Financial Difficulties.
Review of Literature
Justification of choosing the topic
More interesting compare to other topics we
were given.
Depression in modern society is a highly
debated topic in todays world.
More resourceful compare to other topics
were given.
Some Definitions
Modern Society: Changes in post industrial era
have form modern society. Modern society has
strong economies and stable governments. The
culture and lifestyle of modern society allow
freedom of religion, favor international trade, and
are heavily influenced by political alliance or
cooperation.
Depression : Depression is a psychological
disorder that affects a person's mood changes,
physical functions and social interactions.
Purpose of the Research
To meet one of the requirements of the
course Introduction to Sociology.
To know how research is conducted in real
world, at least at its tiniest bit.
Methodology
Hypothesis
In our Hypothesis:
Dependent Variable is Depression
Independent Variable is Financial Difficulties
Financial Instability, one of the elements
of modern society causes depression
Research Design
Research Strategy
We will use mixed strategy, a combination of
both qualitative and quantitative research
strategy
Sampling Strategy
Income Level Range in BDT
Lower Level Income Below 10,000
Lower Mid-Level Income 10,000 – 30,000
Mid-Level Income 31,000 – 90,000
Upper Mid-Level Income 91,000 – 150,000
Higher Level Income Above 150,000
We will use the Purposive Sampling Strategy for
sampling.
It is based on Income Level. These levels are based on
hypothetical assumptions.
The Samples Selected
Our samples were taken based on their
Income Level. They were selected from
different age and location upon their Income
Level.
oOur sample size for Questionnaire was 20
oOur sample size for Interview was 3
Justification for Choosing the Sample
Our focus was on financial condition of
individuals that leads to depression or not.
Taking this sample size was more convenient
for us.
This sample was easy to reach.
Research Method
We used two data collection techniques for our
research:

INTERVIEW TO A STUDENT OF
NORTH SOUTH UNIVERSITY
Age : 20
No personal income
Sound family condition
Social clustering is not a problem in her case
She doesn’t think unemployment cause depression in her
life
She is suffering from depression caused mainly due to
instable personal relationship
Remedy according to her: Even though she knew the
problem was a communication gap, she specified that the
actual problem was accepting the fact that they were indeed
having difficulties in their relationship.
INTERVIEW TO AN AUTO-
RICKSHAW PULLER
Age : Approximately 42
Income: approximately 12000-15000BDT
Previously, he was almost at the brink of a broken family and
was also drug addicted but at the current situation, things are way
better
He believes her daughter is facing problems caused by social
clustering despite studying on a scholarship
He believes unemployment and depression are inversely related
He strongly believes that depression is inversely related with
money
Remedy according to him: He believes hard work with a
combination of social recognition may eradicate depression
caused by depression.
INTERVIEW TO A MIDDLE LEVEL
MANAGER
Age: 36
Income: 40000 BDT along with other amenities
He was at discomfort initially
He said he cannot remember suffering from depression caused
by financial instability
He did not mention anything specifically about depression
caused by financial instability but he mentioned that he was
quite alienated during his teenage
He said he was depressed when he was unemployed after his
graduation
He believes hard work with a combination of social recognition
may eradicate depression caused by depression.
Discussion and Conclusion
Our research on this topic is more of a
follow up research. Modern Society with
several independent tools that can cause
depression what we discussed earlier.
The research tools that we have used
returned us the findings that support our
hypothesis.
Discussion and Conclusion
We have found out that people in the age range
of 21-40 are more depressed than others.
We found the following reasons mainly
responsible behind depression:
Financial Difficulties
Family and Relationship Complexity
Social Problems
Technology
Discussion and Conclusion
People have agreed that getting jobs or rise
in income could reduce depression
People also said that financial difficulties
can also harm in one’s relationship
Finally, we came up with to the end that
Financial Difficulties is one of the most
vital cause that caused depression in
modern society.
