NEWS Yale University hosted a livestream event about
Refugee Crisis with the collaboration of
Santander Universities
27th
November 2015.- Santander Universities hosted its first-ever live video streaming event
at Yale University this month – a panel discussion called, “Conversations on the Refugee
Crisis”. The event was well received by higher education institutions in the US and globally.
In total, more than 30 institutions from around the globe tuned in for the discussion led by
four of the 2015 World Fellows. The ´World Fellows program´, sponsored by Santander
Universities, brings accomplished, mid-career, global leaders to New Haven, Connecticut, so
that they can contribute to Yale’s intellectual life, collaborate with peers, and mentor
students. Fellows return home ready to test their own boundaries and think differently
about their work.
“With many different dimensions of the current refugee crisis in Europe, the 2015 Forum at
the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs was the right place for an important discussion on this
global issue” said Eduardo Garrido, director Santander Universities U.S. “Viewers of the live
stream heard about the effects of displacement on an individual’s identity and rights.”
In addition, many of Santander Universities’ partner universities in the U.S. circulated the
video link to their faculty and students. At Monmouth University in New Jersey, for instance,
the University’s Global Education Office dedicated a conference room on campus to the
viewing of the discussion and held a brief discussion with students following the event.
Dr. Rekha Datta, Interim Vice Provost for Global Education at Monmouth, said: “The session
was wonderful. The speakers were great -all who attended agreed that it was informative,
timely, and the perspectives were indeed very valuable, not just for Europe, but for global
migration and displaced peoples. Everyone enjoyed it, and learned a lot. Thank you again for
bringing this our way and thanks to Santander for their wonderful work with universities”.
Banco Santander is the largest investor in education in the world (Varkey/UNESCO report –
Fortune 500). This initiative is backed by Santander Universities which has 1,200
collaboration agreements in place with universities and institutions worldwide.
In 2015, Santander granted more than 35,000 scholarships, financial aid for study and
professional practices, and plans to grant more than 128,800 between 2016 and 2018. The
entity backs more than 3,900 university projects each year and has earmarked 1.7 billion
euros to support higher education projects by 2018. More information:
