4. What is a knowledge base?
A database of electronic resources information
Contains information about global holdings
◦ Packages (e.g., JSTOR Arts and Sciences I, Elsevier Freedom Collection)
◦ Titles (e.g., Anthropological Review, Tetrahedron)
◦ Package + Title = Holding
Contains information about what holdings a library provides access to
6. What does a kb do?
Tracks a library’s e-resources content
Supports OpenURL linking to an appropriate copy
Supports discovery through unified search indexes and MARC records
services
Supports electronic resources management
7. The problem
If the holdings information in the knowledge base is wrong, it impacts
all of the systems relying on it
Common data problems include
◦ Incorrect identifiers (ISSNs and ISBNs)
◦ Incorrect dates
◦ Outdated information about which
titles are in which packages
8. How can KBART help?
Establish best practice guidelines for data formatting and delivery
Provide educational materials and events
Provide endorsements and registry
12. KBART endorsement
1. Provider submits file to working group
2. Format and content are reviewed, recommendations made and
implemented
3. Provider makes data publicly available
4. Endorsed!
14. Current priorities
Develop materials to make it easier to implement KBART
Solicit more endorsements and get new providers added to the registry
Re-endorse providers for Phase II
Thinking about future directions
