  4. SOCIAL LOAFING
  5. #1 EQUITY OF EFFORT “Everyone else is goofing of, so why shouldn’t I?”
  6. #2 LOSS OF PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY “I’m Lost in the Crowd, so who cares?”
  7. #3 MOTIVATIONAL LOSS DUE TO THE SHARING OF REWARDS “Why Should I Work Harder than the others when everyone get the same reward”
  8. #4 COORDINATION LOST AS MORE PEOPLE PERFORM THE TASK “I think it was his responsibility”
  9. WHEN ? 1. Task was perceived to be unimportant, simple or not interesting 2. Group members think their individual effort is not identifiable 3. Group member expect their co-worker to loaf
  10. Team Members Reduce their effort because they feel less responsible for the output
  11. LESS IS MORE IN TEAM
  12. SOLUTION 1. Divide up a complex task into manageable bits and spread it out 2. Generate sense of urgency 3. Make weaker member feels responsible
  13. OR Provide greater transparency Performance Management and feedback mechanism
