Media as evaluation

 1. 1. Media AS Evaluation By Badria El-Alami
 2. 2. The questions to answer in my evaluation

In what ways does your horror film opening use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real horror film opening?

How does your horror film opening represent particular social groups?

What kind of media institution might distribute your horror film opening and why?

Who would be the audience for your horror film opening?

How did you attract/address your audience?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your horror film opening?

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full horror film opening?

 3. 3. In what ways does your horror film opening use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real horror film opening?

In my 2 minute horror film opening ‘Infatuation’, I have used a lot of typical horror film conventions. One example is that I showed a death in the first five minutes. I did this because it makes the audience want to see what happens next. Also, I didn’t show why the murderer killed the woman, this is because it will make the audience want to find out why by watching the rest of the film.

 4. 4. How does your horror film opening represent particular social groups?

In my 2 minute horror film opening, I have shown the female wearing a white top, this represents her as angelic and innocent. The male however is wearing dark clothes, which represents him as dark and evil.

 5. 5. What kind of media institution might distribute your horror film opening and why?

The media institution company that might distribute my horror film opening is ‘Hammer Film Productions’.

I think this because Hammer is well known for distributing films with a genre of science-fiction, horror and thrillers.

 6. 6. Who would be the audience for your horror film opening?

My horror film opening is targeted mainly at teenagers around the age of 15-18. This is because the age group of the actors in the film are teenagers and also, teenagers like the adrenaline and thrill that horror films bring to them.

Teenagers like tension and suspense and there is a lot of this in the horror genre.

I have chosen this horror film opening to be classified a 15. This is because the actors are 15 so it is more suitable for the audience to be around the same age.

 7. 7. How did you attract/address your audience?

I attract teenagers as my audience because actors are also teenagers and are 17 years old. Also, because there is a murder scene in the first 5 minutes, this attracts the younger audience as it is very thrilling and it really gets the audience wanting more.

 8. 8. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your horror film opening?

When I first started the Media Studies course, I didn’t know much about technology but now I know a lot about how to use different programs to edit film clips together, create my own music and titles etc.

Whilst making my 2 minute horror film opening, I have learnt how to use different types of software and technology such as: Final Cut Express, iMovies, iDVD, LiveType, Garage Band, Slide Share and Blogger. I have now had a lot of practice using these programs.

During the production of my horror film opening, I also learnt how to use the Canon cameras, tripod, dolly and the Apple Macs.

All of these types of technologies have helped me to make a successful 2 minute horror film opening.

 9. 9. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full horror film opening?

When I first started this Media Studies course, I didn’t know the different types of camera shots/movements.

When I did my preliminary task, I only knew how to use certain camera shots such as close up shots and establishing shot. I also didn’t know how to use a tripod so most of the shots were hand held or the camera was placed on a chair to give me a more steadier shot.

Now that I have completed my 2 minute horror film opening, I have realised that I have progressed a lot. This is because I have used a lot more camera shots, I was able to use a tripod and I even added music and non-diegetic sounds to build the tension and suspense in my production.

I was also able to use iMovies to import the camera footage onto the Apple Macs, and I was also able to edit my footage using Final Cut Express a lot better than I did when I was editing my preliminary task. I learnt how to create music, sounds and titles to add to my production to give a better effect.
