NSG Presentation - GRI Reporting

 1. 1. Global Reporting Initiative - GRI Nick Shore Sustainability Director, NSG
 2. 2. GRI - Global Reporting Initiative

A reporting standard, not a Sustainability standard.

Consistent with UN Global Compact framework and development goals.

Framework for reporting; G3.0 (2006) being updated to G3.1 (2011), G4.0 under discussion.

Standard disclosures regarding company strategy, organisation, reporting parameters and governance (mostly mandatory).

Performance indicators (PI) in six areas: environment, human rights, labour practices, society, product responsibility and economic. Categorised as 'core' or 'additional'.

Many updated definitions, and some additional PIs, for G3.1, especially in human rights and labour practices areas.

Number of areas and number of PIs reported on determines whether reports classified as C, B or A. External audit adds a '+'.

Clear guidance about how to report PI, trends, aggregated data etc.

 3. 3. GRI Report Structure

Strategy & profile

Strategy & analysis

Organisational profile

Report Parameters

Governance, Commitments & Engagement

Management Approach

Performance Indicators

Economic

Environmental

Labour practices & decent work

Human rights

Society

Product responsibility

 4. 4. GRI Levels

A (A+ with external audit)

As B for report scope, profile and management approach.

Disclosure of all core PI and any sector specific ones.

B (B+ with external audit)

As C, with extra disclosures required regarding report scope and profile.

Management approach for each area of PI reporting must be disclosed.

Reporting of at least 20 PI, including at least one from each area.

C (C+ with external audit)

Mandatory requirements for disclosure of report scope and profile.

Reporting of 10 PI, including at least one each from social, economic and environmental

Data must be made available publicly, but can be document or web based, or a combination of the two. GRI application level declaration must be high profile.

 5. 5. Benefits of GRI

Benefits:

Clear standard and evaluation levels

Targets the organisation on what to measure

Public declaration brings some management focus

Other companies publishing in the same format allows comparison and benchmarking – Sustainability Disclosure Database

But.....

Self assessment (without +) can allow quite variable reporting to be allocated the same rating.

A+ declaration, or anything approaching it, is quite onerous in terms of data collection, consolidation and reporting for any complex organisation

My opinion: very helpful to start reporting, but diminishing returns as one progresses through the levels. NSG are a self declared B with no plans for A or A+, although we will consider B+ in due course.
