  2. 2. Lesson Objectives <ul><li>To know what a tornado is. </li></ul><ul><li>To understand the difference between a tornado and a hurricane. </li></ul><ul><li>To know the effects caused by hurricanes and tornados </li></ul>
  3. 3. What is a Tornado? <ul><li>A tornado occurs when warm air rises underneath cold air. This forms a large thunderstorm. </li></ul><ul><li>The quicker the warm air rises, the faster the wind moves in different directions. This causes the thunderstorm cloud to rotate. </li></ul><ul><li>A tail drops out of the thunder cloud towards the ground forming a tornado. </li></ul><ul><li>How a tornado forms: BBC WEBSITE </li></ul>

Difference between hurricane and tornado <ul><li>Hurricane </li></ul><ul><li>Can last for a few days </li></ul><ul><li>75 – 155mph </li></ul><ul><li>Created over the ocean die out over land due to lack of water. </li></ul><ul><li>Can be hundreds of KM across </li></ul><ul><li>Tornado </li></ul><ul><li>Dies out in minutes </li></ul><ul><li>40 – 379mph </li></ul><ul><li>Created over land only </li></ul><ul><li>Can be hundreds of Metres across </li></ul>

Success Criteria <ul><li>You are going to create a cartoon strip on the various effects of a hurricane OR tornado. </li></ul><ul><li>Remember: </li></ul><ul><li>It must show the correct level of damage. </li></ul><ul><li>It should be clear and easy to understand. </li></ul><ul><li>It could include information on what to do in the case of a hurricane / tornado. </li></ul>

Choose the hurricane game and working in pairs try to mitigate against the impending hurricane. </li></ul><ul><li>You will have a limited budget and objectives of what you should try to protect and build. </li></ul><ul><li>Once the hurricane has hit and you find out how well you did, you need to write a paragraph in your books about what people can do to protect against a hurricane / tornado and what problems did you have? </li></ul>
