8. Service Selection
• Is the technology one which will offer improvements to the teaching
environment?
• Will the service/procurement have a significant benefit to multiple post-
secondary institutions?
• Is the shared service/procurement scalable to the entire post-secondary
system?
• Will the service/procurement reduce costs for the members?
• Can additional value be created by the service/procurement using a shared
services approach?
• Will BCNET/BCcampus involvement in the shared service add greater
efficiency and reduce overhead costs to their members?

Editor's Notes
Lets not put commonalities like all institutions are members and instead verbally speak to that on this slide and through the presentation on how similar we really are
Similarities:
Shared membership
Driven by needs of members/institutions
Responsive to government demands
Participatory governance for services
Context on where we are today:
Although BCNET and BCcampus share the same membership, both organization have a different focus within the member institutions.
BCcampus has been a leader in identifying and developing new technologies in the educational technology fields and in the past moving these to an operational state.
BCNET has worked closely with the IT Systems departs within the institutions, providing network connectivity, shared services and shared procurements.
BCNET and BCcampus signed a memorandum of understanding on January 23, 2014 which defined core principles on how the two organizations can continue to act as partners in the development of new and existing educational technology service.
BCNET and BCcampus both collaborate with and offer consultation services to post-secondary institutions and stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to institutional and systemic needs. They provide services and support to B.C.'s post-secondary sector so that they may do together what one institution may not be able to do, or find very difficult to do alone.
BCcampus role:
At the request of its stakeholders, BCcampus will, in partnership with interested institutions, research, evaluate, and implement pilot instances of educational technologies and applications:
Research innovative educational technologies for adoption
Ensure a pedagogical focus to all evaluations
Coordinate and develop communities of practice for evaluation and pilot implementation of the technologies
Implement and support technologies and applications, establish interim governance through the pilot phase
BCNET role:
With support of its members, BCNET will develop and operate mature shared services:
Provide core IT infrastructure as the basis for such services
Procure and negotiate software licenses, third-‐party services and contracts needed for the deployment and growth of educational technologies, hosting services (hardware), technical support, help desk, maintenance and upgrade fees, learning communities and opportunities for implementation.
Create and manage contractual agreements with members for services
Joint BCNET/BCcampus roles
Transition of educational technologies and applications from pilot (BCcampus) to operational phases (BCNET), facilitated through collaborative IT and educational technology and/or teaching and learning working groups
Collaborative development of a road-map for shared educational technology services
Communicating service requests out and responding to expressions of interest in participation
Supporting networking and communication between institutions, BCcampus, and BCNET.
Defining service offering parameters.

Should each person run through a use case using this process model to illustrate how it works?
Common in Blue, BCcampus in Yellow and BCNET in Green
For the past two years, BCcampus and BCNET (Dean and Denise) have been working together to reach a common understanding of process and joint opportunities for serving the shared membership.
We are committed to continue to communicate and share intelligence on the requirements/needs of the BC post-secondary system as it pertains to our organizations
BCcampus participates, where appropriate, on BCNET working groups and committees.
During transition of pilot services to operational services, BCNET participates on BCcampus participatory committees
