BC SVP: Grant-making Goals <ul><li>To increase capacity of Grantee organizations </li></ul><ul><li>To effectively engage Partners in helping Grantees increase capacity </li></ul><ul><li>Current area of support: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Prevention; ensuring that kids and families stay healthy in mind and body to better manage life now and in the future. </li></ul></ul>

Key Operating Principle: Building Capacity <ul><li>Emphasized throughout the Grantee/SVP partnership </li></ul><ul><li>By the end of an investment cycle, the enterprise or project should: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Demonstrate improved strength in one or more capacity parameters </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Have developed a replacement for SVP's funding </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Have built enduring relationships with one or more SV Partners and/or other high capacity volunteers </li></ul></ul>
  7. 7. Key Guidelines <ul><li>Grants of time + money are for program and/or capacity building </li></ul><ul><li>Grants are flexible. Tell us what you need. Do you have current urgent needs or are you planning a longer-term project 2-5 years in length? </li></ul><ul><li>Grantees must annually re-qualify, by making satisfactory progress toward stated goals </li></ul><ul><li>Capacity building must be clearly defined and discussed in goals throughout the granting relationship </li></ul>

Decision Process <ul><li>ED identifies possible Grantees during an in-person interview </li></ul><ul><li>If you are selected you will submit a one-page form describing your grant request </li></ul><ul><li>BC SVP Opportunities Committee will review your doc. and will schedule a second interview with you </li></ul>

Decision Process <ul><li>If the Oppty Cmte. accepts your proposal </li></ul><ul><li>a 2-3 minute video will be produced about your organization at BC SVP expense </li></ul><ul><li>Your video and one-pager will be sent to the full partnership for approval </li></ul><ul><li>If selected you will receive your grant request in addition to the probono consulting services for the duration of your grant agreement </li></ul>

Decision Process <ul><li>The Project : </li></ul><ul><li>Does the project clearly identify a critical need, population & the intended change </li></ul><ul><li>Is the project a game changer/innovative? </li></ul><ul><li>Do you have adequate measures in place? </li></ul><ul><li>Does the proposal demonstrate measurable & meaningful change? </li></ul><ul><li>Is the budget realistic? </li></ul>

Decision Process <ul><li>The Organization </li></ul><ul><li>Does the org. have a track record in accomplishing its goals </li></ul><ul><li>Does the org. know what growth looks like for itself? </li></ul><ul><li>Is there evidence of understanding their current social environment? </li></ul><ul><li>Does the project proposed fit into a long-term growth vision? </li></ul><ul><li>Can you address long-term sustainability goals? </li></ul>

Decision Process <ul><li>The Project Team </li></ul><ul><li>Does the project team leader have a track record for meeting objectives? </li></ul><ul><li>Does the project team have the skills required to meet the objs. of the project? </li></ul><ul><li>Does the group collaborate with others working on the same social issue? </li></ul><ul><li>Is the group tapped into relevant community networks </li></ul><ul><li>Does the group make effective use of volunteers? </li></ul>

Decision Process <ul><li>Fit with SVP Mission </li></ul><ul><li>Can the project attract Partner talent $ commitment? </li></ul><ul><li>What is innovative/entrepreneurial about the project? </li></ul><ul><li>How important is SVP participation to the success of the project? </li></ul><ul><li>Is the organization and its management commitment to working with SVP for the duration of the project? </li></ul>

Decision Process <ul><li>Reasons your request may not be chosen: </li></ul><ul><li>Unclear need or not compelling </li></ul><ul><li>Does not need substantive involvement by our volunteers </li></ul><ul><li>Does not demonstrate an understanding of what SVP is trying to do or how to leverage SVP </li></ul><ul><li>Too much vision and not enough detail about how and what </li></ul><ul><li>Too much to do; underestimates challenges </li></ul><ul><li>Not financially feasible </li></ul><ul><li>Inconsistent with mission (yours or SVPs) </li></ul>
