What is Formalism
3
• Formalism is a term used in literary theory to describe
critical methods that examine, interpret, or assess a text's
essential elements. These elements include literary
devices like meter, motifs, grammar, and syntax.
• Formalism disregards the author's background, cultural
influences, as well as the actual subject matter of the
work. Rather, it is focused on the writing's genre and
form. Formalism, for instance, is concerned with how
grammar, syntax, and meter are used in poetry.

Formalism Approach
• A formalistic approach was used in Paz Marque Benitez's masterpiece
"Dead Stars," which was published in 1925, to show the imagery,
symbolism, and theme depicting the conflicted emotions of an older
bachelor named Alfredo Salazar, whose passion and affection for his
fiancée started to fade because he was drawn towards another woman
named Julia Salas. The narrative fiction "Dead stars" was written from the
third person's perspective. Analyzing the text reveals a profusion of
imagery that aids in bringing the text's various themes to life.

Formalist Approach
• Also noticeable is the implied symbolism in conclusion, which sees Alfredo
and Julia reunited after an eight-year separation. Alfredo discovers that their
affection has already faded, like a "dead star"—emitting an appearance of
brightness and sparkle when it was long dead. He sees her differently from
what he had imagined in the past and over the years.
• The narrative has several themes, including tragic love, which suggests a
story that is both lovely and tragic. In it, two people fall in love, but their
relationship eventually fails. The appeal of a romantic tragedy is that it gives
us a chance to feel every possible human emotion. The overall theme
implies that individuals do change, whatever the situation. This is
demonstrated in the end when Alfredo confronts Julia and observes that she
is now different, just like him.
