Knowing what we each don’t know: bringing Library and Researcher/Developer communities together to bridge the technical divide

This presentation was part of the CAVAL/ANDS Workshop - Managing library teams for a research and data-intensive future
(Melbourne, 28 July 2017). Workshop program and presentations from other speakers: http://www.ands.org.au/news-and-events/presentations/2017

bringing Library and Researcher/Developer communities together to bridge the technical divide: Steve Androulakis

  1. 1. Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills How can librarians further help eResearch infrastructure and its users?
  2. 2. 2017-2018 Joint investment projects Joint skills and community engagement Very different histories and methods! Jun 30 2018.. ??? 3 eResearch capabilities Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills
  3. 3. - Data management practice - Standards development - Interoperability - Policy evolution - Publishing - Maintaining data services Different strengths: ANDS Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills
  4. 4. - Node-based cloud storage infrastructure - Data services for lifecycle management, movement - Some discipline-focussed data engagements (A1.X) Different strengths: RDS Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills
  5. 5. - Node-based cloud compute infrastructure - Data services for analysis, collaboration - Discipline-specific services through VLs Different strengths: Nectar Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills
  6. 6. A software service providing researchers access to data, analysis and collaboration tools. Increasingly, research will be done in virtual labs. VL services solve issues.. - Data being too big to download - Data being too big to compute on your laptop - Data being too big to collaborate over - Analysis software too hard to use and install What’s a virtual lab? 7. 7. Biodiversity and Climate Change Virtual Lab Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills
  8. 8. What data technology skills are needed in modern research? Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills
  9. 9. If researchers use virtual labs, where does the data go? Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills
  10. 10. This is where we *really* need librarians. Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills
  11. 11. A joint ANDS, Nectar, RDS investment program for 2017-2018+. Librarians need to influence virtual labs and their researchers by - Helping develop data management, archival and publishing policy - Helping researchers understand the long term implications of working with data Data Enhanced Virtual Labs Steve Androulakis, Community Platforms (ANDS, Nectar, RDS) tinyurl.com/caval-skills
  12. 12. Final Thoughts Researchers know they need to code to solve immediate problems. They don’t often know they need data management until it's too late. In a world of virtual labs, what are their relation to data repositories? How do research offices track outputs of virtual labs? Tech doesn’t hold the answer.
