Bizzards Prelims @ Bizzathlon, IIM Kozhikode

  1. 1. Bizzards Preliminary
  2. 2. Solve for A-Z 1 pt for each correct answer, no negatives Starred questions to break ties
  3. 3. The difference between the A B and the C B is that the latter wears sunglasses ,and appears to be a different species. The C B began in 1989 as a parody of the A B, but eventually became its mascot, starring in a series of commercials that showed it outlasting such film nasties as Darth Vader, King Kong and the Wicked Witch of the West. C is owned by the eponymous C Holdings, while A is now owned by D, a company that traces its roots back to 1837 in Cincinnati and perhaps owes its existence to a persuasive father-inlaw. One of D’s more popular brands is E, a F brand that gets its name from the French word for ‘jewel’, and was one of the first Fs to make a virtue out of being white. 1
  4. 4. The difference between Fs and Gs is that the latter are basically surfactants, whereas the former are salts of fatty acids. After dominating the G market in India for decades, D is nowadays placed 3 rd in terms of market share, behind their bitter multinational rivals H, and the Kanpur-based Rohit Surfactants Pvt. Ltd. (RSPL), manufacturers of the I brand of G. RSPL’s success in the G market has seen them diversify of late, and they have more recently entered the apparel market with a brand of shoes called Red Chief, which is endorsed by J. J, incidentally, also is the current brand ambassador for K, which in the past has been endorsed by the likes of Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. 2
  5. 5. The difference between K and L is that while both are M-based, K is usually chocolate-flavoured. K was developed specifically for the Indian market by N in 1977, while L was acquired by N’s predecessor in 1969 from the company named after its founder. In the UK, the word L is often used as a substitute for the profanity “bollocks”. M is basically germinated cereal grains that have been dried in a special process that converts the grain’s starches to sugars. M is also used to make O, the world’s most widely-consumed alcoholic beverage, the most widely-consumed variety of which is called P. 3
  6. 6. The difference between an P and a Q is that the former is made by warm fermentation, whereas the latter is fermented and conditioned at low temperatures. The word P comes from the Old English word that stood for “sorcery, magic, possession, intoxication”, and is sometimes used interchangeably with O. The term Q comes from the German word for ‘to store’, which in turn comes from the word for ‘cellar’ or ‘cave’, since that is where most storage of Qs used to take place. R is a another popular kind of Q, and originated in the Czech city of Plzen, from which it derives its name. S, the largestselling brand of O in India, is a Q. S is produced by a company led by its Chairman T, a businessman who has a reputation of being somewhat of a U. 4
  7. 7. The difference between the U B suit and the V B suit is that although both are uniforms, the latter is designed to protect in a sterile work environment, whereas the former is designed to titillate in a work environment where virility, not sterility, is the order of the day. Designed by Zelda Wynn Valdes, the U B suit was the first service uniform to be trademarked in the United States. W, who currently runs a venture capital company called Jupiter Capital, once worked for V and was part of the team that worked on Operation X that produced the Y. Incidentally, a Taiwanese company named Giant is the largest manufacturer of Xs in the world, an honour that once belonged to an Indian company. W was also responsible for founding a company today known as Loop Mobile, and whose parent company used to manufacture Z, a brand that competed with A & C until 2005, when it was acquired by a subsidiary of C. Give everything. 5
