  2. 2. OFF CAMPUS STUDY In the last few decades the way information is being shared has been changed a lot, freely sharing of information and pervasiveness of the internet have created various new opportunities for teaching and learning (Martin. F, 2012). There is a growing concern that such technology provide a convergence between on and off-campus teaching and learning however this convergence takes some strong consideration of the limitation among the off campus learners Ferzaneh (2011). Recently the adaption of new learning systems like LMSs (learning management system) such as black board, open-source and moodle software are becoming more and more common (Martin. F, 2012). For various reason the concept of distance education has been strongly criticized as an unacceptable method of teaching, for any subject. The distance learning concept of education has also been criticized from the staff perspective mainly because a lot of advance planning is required, which from the employers point of view is generally considered as inferior form of education (Askeland & Payne et al, 2007) Such practice of education does not provide enough opportunities for students to participate one to one, along with other limitation on opportunity for oral communication, leading to social isolation for students (Askeland. G, 2007) Undoubtedly the future of any society, the overall quality and efficiency of its people is highly dependent on the education system of the country Ferzaneh (2011). The overall appearance of distance education is connected with the changing conditions of economical, social and technological aspect, every country need better literacy and more comprehensive education, for this particular reason distance education provides the opportunity to everyone to learn throughout their entire life (Kiryakova. G, 2009). Enrolment of students in both on campus and off campus has continued to increase steadily over the past few years, for distance education it is important to have technology like internet and computers at both ends. The introduction of new technologies such as radio and TV set a new stage for the development of distance education. Over time many institutes adapted the use of audio and video materials along with printed materials, which helped in visualization of education and increased its effectiveness.
  3. 3. The third stage in the development of distance education is generally based on the development of digital technologies and usage of Internet as an educational environment. The interaction and communication among participants in education are widely used and as a result we observe more effective learning (Kiryakova. G, 2011). Majority of the students are usually enrolled in on campus education program due to various advantages that it has to offer, however enrolling in on campus education program does have some disadvantages attached to it, one of the main disadvantage that can be highlight here is the time restrictions that it places on working class people. Those who are working full time or have other important commitments are the ones who cannot manage to take out any time at all out of their busy schedule. Since all the lectures and workshops are conducted in class and during the day time, this places a big issue on the working class people. Fulltime on campus graduates are required to attend a total of approximately 110 hours of lecture/skills classes per semester as well as they have to participate in other group discussions, which is hard to manage for people who are working full time Trotter.(2010). Whereas on the other hand if we compare the off campus education system, it is becoming more and more popular. Those who cannot take out time during their working hours can study by managing their own time, however the off campus education system has its own disadvantages (Dugwell. T, 2008). One major disadvantage to highlight is the legitimate of assignments completed by students, in most of the cases students will enroll in programs but they might seek help of others to complete their assignments/projects which can easily be categorized as plagiarism (Kiryakova. G, 2009). In such situations students not only feel less motivated towards their education but at times because learners are separated from teachers in distance education they feel uncomfortable. This result in outsourcing assignments to other professionals, just to secure good marks. Distance education becomes more and more prevalent in contemporary society (Martin. F, 2012). It is an integral part of education regardless of its form and technologies used. In the center of the intention of the teachers are the necessities of the students and their specific features.
  4. 4. In order to be able to deal with the issues that are associated with on campus education system, institutes have to come up with better solution. Universities and colleges have to offer their programs that are more in demand on various timings, like over the weekend or may be later in the evening. So by offering such solutions, those who were not been able to take out time during the day to enroll in any degree will now be able to do so (Dugwell. T, 2008). At the same time, to deal with issues associated with off campus education system universities has to invest more in their technology, have to organize more web conferences just to create a traditional classroom feeling, a 24 hour online service has to be made available for all the students so in case if they have any issues or need clarification on any part can be provided (Martin. F, 2012) Today, most distance courses are using digitized lectures, audio supplementation, discussion boards, and interactive software to incorporate the active use of writing, problem analysis, and collaborative learning. Proponents of distance learning stress that properly designed online courses can better accommodate different learning styles and provide more individualized instruction to each student. From an administrative position, online courses offer the opportunity to reach a large number of nontraditional or under-served audiences and afford greater flexibility in scheduling classes, where as in a conventional classroom, professors can quickly adjust lectures based on direct (student questions) and indirect (student posture/expressions) student feedback. With the help of Face-to-face interactions, it allows professors to tailor lectures to tap student enthusiasm for particular topics or examples. Since more and more universities are now offering off campus courses, they must keep in mind that majority of the students still prefer the traditional way of teaching and the market for off campus courses may be limited.
  5. 5. Conclusion Almost every single university is trying to update themselves in order to stay competitive in the market, in order to do so it requires to follow what the market leaders are doing and also what’s the trend. Distance education definitely create the opportunity to earn various level degrees in this format and there is no doubt that it is growing in demand, more and more students are enrolling in online courses but there are few issues associated with it for example the legitimacy of students learning. Individuals have different perceptions of what is acceptable and what is dishonest. As students prepare for future employment, what they learn as acceptable behavior during their course of study may well inform their expectations of acceptable behavior in their professional lives Many international students might enroll in online courses to get the degree but will seek someone help, such issue needs to be considered by the universities and appropriate steps to solve the issue should be taken.
