  2. 2. Pangkalan BunAdministratively, Pangkalan Bun is a sub district, andcapital of the West Kotawaringin district. The bustlinglittle town was once the seat of power of the KutaringinSultanate in the reign of Sultan Imanudin reign in 1811-1814. The legacy of the sultanate can be found at theKeraton Kuning or Yellow Palace, in the heart ofPangkala Bun. The palace itself is reconstruced, sincethe original site was burnt down in 1986. Historically, theKutaringin Sultanate was once a district of the BanjarKingdom which emerged as a separate sultanate duringthe reign of Sultan Banjar IV Mustainbillah. TheSultanate came under the rule of Javanese MajapahitKingdom, and therefore traces of Javanese culture arefound abundant in the area.

  9. 9. In 1973, DR. Birute Galdinas establishedThe Orangutan Care Center Quarantine(OCCQ) in Pangkalan Bun. Ever since, thefacility has taken care of wounded Orangutansand those confiscated by the NaturalResource Conservation Office (BKSDA) . Inthis quarantine facility, visitors can alsointeract with charming orangutan babies.Visitors will be guided and supervised by anofficer in charge when interacting with theyoung orangutans. The facility encompassesapproximately 100 hectares and canaccommodate over 300 primates.
