Coconut Oil: Buyers Guide + How To Use It

  1. 1. C O C O N U T O I L B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A CONSUMER AND BUYERS GUIDE + HOW TO USE COCONUT OIL!
  2. 2. W H O A R E W E ? B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A TWC is about more than food, movement and what's on trend . We love people, we love stories and we are determined to create a beautiful broad open perspective on wellness - a never ending deliberate quest to find the best mix of science, health, food, design and love. Asja is a Nutritionist and Wholefood Chef and Carissa is a Graphic Designer and Wellness Lover!
  3. 3. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A We do not cook everything in coconut oil and don't want everything to taste like coconut but it is HANDS DOWN the product we get asked about most so here is a guide to explain the different types, the benefits and how to use it. As you will see, we use it more in our beauty cabinet than we do in the kitchen but this information is important all the same!
  4. 4. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A There will be no touting of the stuff as a miracle oil, superfood or otherwise. It is a real food, that has great nutrient density and is economical to use - and if you have attended any of our workshops you know that this is the basis of how we choose ingredients to use in our kitchen creations. Eat Real Food. Every. Day.
  5. 5. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A So, what should I consider when buying my coconut oil?
  6. 6. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A It should be white and free of contaminants! TIP: When you get an oil home be wary if it tastes cooked or smokey. It may indicate that it was exposed to really high heats in processing. It does take a super high heat to damage the coconut oil, but I would try a another brand where this attribute doesn't exist just to play it safe. 1 Check its colour
  7. 7. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A Price doesn't determine quality, there are great priced ones around of awesome quality and some that are expensive and leave a lot to be desired. In any case, if you find one your like consider buying in bulk as the cost really comes down and as I have mentioned, coconut oil is shelf stable ...so no worries about it going off! 2. Price
  8. 8. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A Look for the words that you have decided are important. An unrefined virgin centrifugally processed oil is of better quality than a refined expeller pressed that is off white and has some floaty bits in it, right?! 3. What it says on the label
  9. 9. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A What Is The Difference Between Refined And Unrefined? Virgin And Extra Virgin? Expeller And Centrifugally Processed? I am so confused!
  10. 10. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A Refined coconut oils are lower in scent, have been refined, bleached and deodorized as it is made from the dried coconut meat. The good fatty acids in coconut oil still exist in this oil, and is often cheaper than its unrefined counterparts. This is a great oil for frying and use on your body. Refined Cococnut Oil
  11. 11. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A When buying refined coconut oil the company matters, there are different chemical and extraction processes that can occur so you need to exercise a little more caution (you don't want to end up with replacing one less than desirable fat in your diet with another, do you?). BUT PLEASE NOTE
  12. 12. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A Unrefined oils are slightly more expensive as it used the fresh raw coconut meat to extract the oil. There is no notable difference between virgin and extra-virgin. Unrefined Cococnut Oil
  13. 13. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A In regards to first pressed, or cold pressed, expeller or centrifugal processing - this relates more to the amount of coconut flavour that will be in the end product (in a nut shell). A cold pressed coconut oil will have a more delicate and subtle flavour as it is heat that brings out the coconut flavour in the extraction process. What about cold press, expeller or centrifugal processing?
  14. 14. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A Niuginui Coconut Oil is truly raw, the business is full of integrity though it can be a little priced. It is true that is smells like fresh coconut milk. Delicious. So what is our favourite?
  15. 15. How Is Coconut Oil Best Stored?
  16. 16. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A In summer I prefer to keep it in the fridge, for two reasons. To keep it scoopable and to protect against any extraneous additions that happen when other delve into my coconut oil stash! In cooler months I am happy to leave it in the pantry. How Is Coconut Oil Best Stored?
  17. 17. Is My Coconut Oil Raw?
  18. 18. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A Whether it is raw depends on extraction process - heat can be applied in expeller processing so look for an oil that undergoes centrifugal extraction is your best best. We love Niuguini and the oil from Peace Love and Vegetable - with the latter being more affordable.. Is My Coconut Oil Raw?
  19. 19. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A As no heat is applied a raw coconut oil is more subtle and delicate in flavour than those oils processed with heat. The fatty acids in coconut oil are heat stable so keep this in mind when considering whether you want to invest in truly 'raw' coconut oil product ....you just might sneak in afew more nutrients, but the ones that truly matter are still in good condition when heat is applied!! Is Raw Worth It?
  20. 20. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A This comes down to the extraction method - heat brings out the coconut-ty flavour. If you want a more subtle flavour try a centrifugally processed oil. If your coconut oil is 'deoderized' you may like to consider whether this is done in a chemical process, or through ceramic distillation or using something like diametaceous earth. Why Does One Brand Taste More Like Coconut Compared To Another?
  21. 21. What Are The Benefits Of Coconut Oil?
  22. 22. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A I love coconut oil for a few reasons, and they are more practical than health related. I am always hesitant to get into the nitty gritty as to the chemical component of foods as I really don't feel that er need to know that for good health. What I will say is this...
  23. 23. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A ...so makes is a better choice for cooking at high heat. High heat damages oils like olive, macadamia and grass-fed butter - and ingesting those isn't a great idea! Coconut oil is stable at a high temperature
  24. 24. B Y A S J A + C A R I S S A ...and this means that you have more flexibility with how often you purchase it, how to store and and how long it lasts. Unlike more fragile oils, coconut oil is more robust and, in my opinion, user friendly. It is shelf stable too!
  25. 25. Slather your body in some coconut oil, with a couple of drops of lavender oil before bed for extra enjoyment!
  26. 26. From my girls with curly locks - they love their coconut oil as a hair balm and curl tamer!!
  27. 27. This is an old Indian detox and health tip that can be hard to get started with - but then just as hard to give up!
  28. 28. Finally Cooking... ...so would you like to grab a free recipe?
  29. 29. ...or find out about all the other parts of the humble (not-so- nutty) coconut?
