Hip hop

  1. 1. Word Cloud I created a word cloud to effectively show the different codes and conventions of Hip Hop. I made some of the words larger to indicate the importance of them compared to the smaller words that have least importance.
  2. 2. Where Did Hip Hop Originate? Hip Hop originated in the 1970’s when an underground movement known as ‘Hip Hop’ began developing in the South Bronx in New York City. The underground movement focused on many aspects of Hip hop today including emceeing (AKA MCing), break beats and house parties. A well-known Jamaican-born DJ, Clive (Kool Herc) Campbell was highly influential in the pioneering stage of Hip Hop music, and helped give Hip Hop the kick start it needed to grow.
  3. 3. How did Hip Hop Develop? Hip Hop had gotten popular outside of the African-American community in the late 1980’s and by the early 2000’s it had become one of the most popular genre’s of music listened to on spotify. Hip Hop is characterized into four main distinct elements which represents the different ‘manifestations’ of the culture: Rap music (oral), DJ-ing (aural), B-Boying (physical) and last but not least Graffiti art (visual). (all four of these elements have sub elements e.g. Rap music includes freestyle.
  4. 4. How has Hip Hop changed music today? During the late 1980’s Hip Hop artists started to create beats in studio’s with drum machines, synthesizers and samples from old funk tracks. Groups such as Public Enemy formed and created a new style of Political Hip Hop, to challenge the wrong acts of injustice and racism that was occurring. Then during the 1990’s Hip Hop blew up further when producers started to use audio editing software's and digital effects to create alternative styles of Hip Hop such as Jazz, which was used by artists such as A Tribe. Moreover in 1990’s more Hip Hop styles started to blow up, the most popular being ‘ganga’ Rap and Hard-core rap by artists such as ‘Nas’ and ‘The Notorious BIG’ two of the most influential Hard-core rappers to grace Hip Hop.
  5. 5. How has Hip Hop changed music today? Furthermore in the 21st Century, many Hip Hop artists have therefore emerged due to the increase in popularity for Hip hop music. Rappers such as Eminem, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar have all dominated the Hip Hop genre which has become one of, if not the most popular genre of music in the world.
