Sanitation disinfection and fumigation in hatchery by Dr M. Ashiq Toor

  1. 1. Prepared by Dr Muhammad Ashiq Toor DVM , B s c (Zoology) Islamia University of Bahawal Pur (IUB) (2010 – 2015) +92-344-499-7375 +92-300-364-2402 Sanitation Disinfection and fumigation in Hatchery
  2. 2. Sanitation Disinfection and fumigation in Hatchery
  3. 3. Sanitation The process of keeping places free from ØDirt ØInfection ØDisease ØRemoving wastes The hatcher is the main source of contamination for the entire hatchery. Debris, dead chicks, and chick fluff are ideal replication sites for bacteria and fungi Øby cleaning
  4. 4. Cleaning and Disinfection Completely free of Microbs Impossible Regular cleaning and disinfection control microbs multiplication Remove organic materials A good cleaning removes up to 85% of microbs
  5. 5. Cleaning & Disinfection Good design for Cleaning Disinfection Effective Disease control in Hatchery
  6. 6. Cleaning Sanitation is always 90% Cleaning Empty refuse Soak in detergents Wash with hot water Rinse Disinfect Mach C Solutions Netherland
  7. 7. Disinfectants and detergents for Equipment Effective disinfectant property Safe for Equipment Compatible with water ØSanitizer reduces to “safe levels” ØDisinfectant kills 100% bacteria selection
  8. 8. Walls, Floors, Ceilings, Windows, Fans, Ducting, and Machines Remove dust and debris  Where necessary, scrub walls and floors  Switch on setter machine to warm up  Broad-spectrum disinfectant detergent solution to the setter machine  Use pressure washing and leave them for drying   Cleaning

  11. 11. Fumigation ( KmNO4 + Formalin) 1:2 Formaldehyde is effective biocide Reacting with carboxyl, amino, hydroxyl and sulfhydryl groups of proteins Effective at room Temp and RH 70%
  12. 12. Procedure Fumigation ( KmNO4 + Formalin (3x) • Sett the eggs in setter trays Move them to fumigation room • KmNO4 60gram • Formalin 120ml • That is 3X concentration Per 100 cubic feet • Circulate for 20 minutes • Expel gas after that by exhaust fan • At room tem.
  13. 13. Fumigation of eggs in setters (1X)  Eggs should be fumigated within 12 h after setting Eggs which have been incubated for 24-96 h should not be fumigated
  14. 14. Fumigation of hatchers (1x) •Removal of all chicks •The cleaning and disinfection of the empty machine. •The disinfected egg trays are replaced •The machine is prepared for the next batch of incubating eggs. •The doors and vents should be closed •Fumigation time should be at least three hours, or preferably overnight Procedure
  15. 15. Neutralisation of formaldehyde gas Formaldehyde gas may be neutralised in 10- 15 min using ammonium hydroxide at an amount equal to half the volume of formalin used
  16. 16. Egg Washing Easier , Faster Clean residuals on eggs Avoid contamination to other eggs by residuals Some managers prefer washing on fumigation
  17. 17. Egg Washing effectively sanitize the hatching eggs if Egg Washing Proper equipment's Proper temperature of solution Washing material, detergents
  18. 18. Disinfectants and detergents for egg washing Quaternary Ammonium ROCCAL-D® 10% Quaternary Ammonium disinfectant 4.2 % Sodium Carbonate 0.4 % EDTA Egg Washing Chlorine based disinfectants widely used for table eggs and also safe for hatching eggs Quaternary Ammonium an excellent sanitizer
  19. 19. Hatchery Waste Disposal Infertile eggs Non- hatched eggs Dead weak or unsalable chicks Egg shells These wastes should be properly disposed of, otherwise they can be a source of disease infection in the hatchery.
  20. 20. Evaluating your total Sanitation program  Hatchability percentages Embryo mortality rates Number (percentage) of rotten eggs in setter First 4 day post hatching mortality rates of chicks Results from Bacterial and Fungal cultures
  21. 21. MICROBIOLOGICAL MONITORING OF HATCHERIES  Simplest way is to use agar plates. For Bacterial cultures - put them in zip lock bags and put them in Setters for 2 days. For Fungal cultures put them in zip lock bags and put them out at room temp for 4-5 days. Procedure in the hatchery Put them out in different parts of hatchery building (label them) for 10 minutes. The test in the hatchery is performed routinely once a month Preparation of media Agar sausages Agar broth
  22. 22. Evaluation of results Setter & Egg Rooms (after cleaning): Number of colonies per air plate Bacteria Mold Rating 0-10 0 Clean 11-20 1-3 Slightly contaminated 21-30 4-6 Moderately contaminated 31 or more 7 or more Heavily contaminated After incubation of samples at 37°C for 16-20 h, the number of bacterial colonies growing on each sample Setter & Egg Rooms (after cleaning): Number of colonies per air plate Heavily contaminated7 or more 31 or more Moderately contaminated4-621-30 Slightly contaminated1-311-20 Clean00-10 RatingMoldBacteria
