Hosting </li></ul><ul><li>- Self hosted (and not at www.Wordpress.com ) </li></ul><ul><li>3. Platform </li></ul><ul><li>- Wordpress (rather than Blogger, TypePad or anything else) </li></ul>

  9. 9. 1. Great Content (slide 1) <ul><li>1. Must be extremely useful or must solve a problem </li></ul><ul><li>2. Also be remarkable that people will share on social media </li></ul><ul><li>3. Easy to read and scannable </li></ul><ul><li>4. Written in plain, concise and common sense style </li></ul>

Put yourself into your writing – write from the heart, be vulnerable, reveal yourself - find your voice </li></ul><ul><li>Creating useful posts is the most important skill to develop as a blogger. </li></ul><ul><li>Unofficial tip – rip off other writers! Learn from the best and see what they are doing! </li></ul><ul><li>(Personal note - I have finally found my voice and niche – it takes time) </li></ul>

Get them from Flickr using Creative Commons:- </li></ul><ul><li>http://www.Flickr.com/CreativeCommons </li></ul><ul><li>You must acknowledge the source of the image. </li></ul>

Use-ability <ul><li>- Easy to navigate around – no fluff </li></ul><ul><li>- Easy to read - make your posts scannable </li></ul><ul><li>- Keep your blog minimalist but functional </li></ul><ul><li>(Zen Habits is very minimalist, but this may not appeal to everyone or be appropriate for your chosen sector) </li></ul>

Design <ul><li>Get the best design you can </li></ul><ul><li>- WordPress has 1,000s of Themes you can choose from. </li></ul><ul><li>- Even better, buy a premium theme such as Thesis or Frugal </li></ul><ul><li>In the long term you may want to get a bespoke design </li></ul><ul><li>For example:- </li></ul><ul><li>http://www.ChrisGuillebeau.com </li></ul><ul><li>(who has a very popular free ebook) </li></ul>

What I would do differently if I was starting today <ul><li>- Use a different domain name e.g. MakeItHappen </li></ul><ul><li>Post 2 to 3 times each week </li></ul><ul><li>Make each article extremely useful and relevant </li></ul><ul><li>At least 1 guest post every week </li></ul><ul><li>Network a lot more with other bloggers, offline and online </li></ul><ul><li>Focus on building my “tribe” of followers </li></ul><ul><li>Look for JV opportunities </li></ul><ul><li>“ Plug” my books and coaching more often </li></ul><ul><li>Learn at every opportunity (such as this seminar) </li></ul>

What’s next for me and my blog? <ul><li>Continue to build my following now that I have reached 1,250 subscribers </li></ul><ul><li>Opportunity to promote my books – both paper copy and ebook formats </li></ul><ul><li>Membership Website e.g. Make It Happen Club </li></ul><ul><li>JVs with other bloggers </li></ul><ul><li>Support and help budding bloggers like you </li></ul>
