Pharmacy colleges may instruct new pharmacists in the
science of medication, but they rarely prepare them for
patient dissatisfaction with rising prescription costs.
That’s what Dr. Michael Rea found as a recent graduate
when he went to work for a retail pharmacy chain,
where patients continually asked him about increasing
costs and insurance coverage.
“It felt like the movie Groundhog Day,” Rea recalled.
“Every day patients would ask why their medications
were getting more expensive.”

One autumn day Rea had a conversation that haunted him.
An elderly woman with eight prescriptions asked
him which two she could skip safely. When he advised
her that she needed all of them, she explained that she
would have to forego some if she wanted to pay her rent.

Aghast, Rea went home that night and spent six hours
researching generic medicines and calling other
pharmacies for their prices. The next day he provided
his customer with a list of alternatives that could
save her $250 a month.
“The look on her face is forever ingrained in
my memory,” Rea said.
And so Rx Savings Solutions, a solution that helps
consumers save on prescription costs, was born. Dr.
Rea saw patients struggle to pay for their medications,
and he knew now they often paid more than needed. He
also found their employers lacked the time and staff to
research alternatives to rising drug prices.
“No one was getting the information they needed,”
Rea said. “There was clearly a lack of efficiency and
transparency in the pharmacy world. I wanted to do
something about it.”
Dr. Rea had several goals. His primary objective was
to help reduce costs for people taking a monthly
maintenance medication. He wanted to complement
that effort by assisting large companies and their
employees in determining the best and most
cost-effective prescription drugs.
By enjoying more transparency, Dr. Rea theorized,
the companies could deliver the information to
employees that would equal savings for everyone.

Defending PHI
Rx Savings Solutions launched only weeks after
the fateful encounter with Dr. Rea’s elderly patient.
The app was a hit right from the start, educating
and empowering consumers while lowering their
medication costs.
Yet on the back end, Dr. Rea faced specific technical
challenges. He knew his solution needed to be not
only reliable, but also secure and compliant when it
came to accessing and storing protected healthcare
information (PHI).
Rea and his new team began to look for a provider
that could offer advanced risk management, along with
the compliance expertise, that would help Rx Savings
Solutions pass HIPAA audits.

This exercise didn’t go as planned. After signing
with a reputable provider, Rea soon realized the

His team went on the hunt once more — and this

Right away, the Rx Savings Solutions team was
impressed with the onboarding experience. A
newcomer to the world of IT security, Rea particularly
appreciated founder Chris Drake’s patience and skill
in explaining the infrastructure.
“Technology is not my forte — I’m in medicine,” Rea
explained, “so I appreciated that he was able to break
it down for me in a way I understood.”

“We’re in a tremendously explosive, high-growth
space,” Rea said. “We might onboard 150,000 people
at a time. That means we need to scale up and down
as needed, and be able to accommodate large traffic
while not paying for more than we need.
“Armor lets us auto-scale without having to
reconfigure or put up new machines. Given that our
business is expected to triple or quadruple in 2015,
that’s obviously a big relief.”

getting active in population health management. By
