They are also required to write and talk about the work of other artists and visual culture for their theoretical studies. They need to learn how to talk about art and design Art Crits : 20 Questions – A Commissioned Artist’s Video (Talking About Talking About: An Introduction to Visual Art Critiques by Giles Bunch)

  15. 15. The hands on session
  16. 16. Critical thinking: When you consider what to say about an image try to………… • Use argument and comparison • Consider more than the obvious • Pay attention to assumptions • Raise questions and try to answer them • Notice emotional issues and address these aspects • Offer reasoned evidence • Try to find more than one way of looking at the image • Recognise that your own prior ideas may be colouring your response
  17. 17. look at one of these image collections Explore the resource and choose an image you think is interesting enough to talk about take down notes while you discuss the image and at 4.30pm we will be ready for you all to present your findings to the room Steve McCurry http://stevemccurry.wordpress.com/ Worth Global Style Network (WGSN) https://tsr.cardiffmet.ac.uk/Learning/Library/eleclib/Pages/databaseatoz.aspx?resourceID=155 Tate Art and Artists https://tsr.cardiffmet.ac.uk/Learning/Library/eleclib/Pages/databaseatoz.aspx?resourceID=117 V&A Collections https://tsr.cardiffmet.ac.uk/Learning/Library/eleclib/Pages/databaseatoz.aspx?resourceID=118 Bridgeman Education https://tsr.cardiffmet.ac.uk/Learning/Library/eleclib/Pages/databaseatoz.aspx?resourceID=17 Google Cultural Institute http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/project/art-project Corbis https://tsr.cardiffmet.ac.uk/Learning/Library/eleclib/Pages/databaseatoz.aspx?resourceID=99 Wellcome Institute https://tsr.cardiffmet.ac.uk/Learning/Library/eleclib/Pages/databaseatoz.aspx?resourceID=119 Jenny’s art design and architecture blog http://artdesarc.blogspot.co.uk/ Slide Library (today as a drawer of slides) Room 2.19 second floor South Block, Howard Gardens http://www.andrewandoru.com/lighttable/ website that turns your iphone into a mini light table for slide viewing
  18. 18. They had fun
  19. 19. Presenting their findings
  20. 20. They learnt How to communicate and work cooperatively with someone they didn’t know The fun of contributing to open discussions Where the electronic library was and that it contains image databases That I am there to help them as a subject specialist librarian That all is not always what it seems in an image That people can hold equally valid but opposing ideas That opinions should be backed up That there are at least an A4 page’s worth of potential questions you could ask of an image (see my hand-out)
  21. 21. I learnt that • Visual literacy (as defined by ACRL ) provides an excellent framework for me to organise and present a wide range of information about images relevant to art and design students • Interactive and hands on teaching sessions engage students–they are fun and encourage the idea that the librarian/teacher is an approachable person. • If you offer Google images as a source students will just search for what they know already I changed the option from Google Images to Google Cultural Institute after the first session
  22. 22. Some of the images the students found and talked about Images are under copyright…they were shown as a lecture (by means of the ‘instruction’ Copyright exception) but not cleared for use in Slideshare
