  2. 2. Vigilante for Hire By Author Antwan Floyd Day Six Standing on the balcony of the RIU PalaceTropical Bay resort and hotel in Jamaica. Daniellestared out on to the beautiful white sands throughher Bvlgari sunglasses, she exhaled admiring thesubtleties of the orange, red, and yellow hues of thesun setting, casting a luminous sparkle off thewater. A chill tickled her spine as she took a sipfrom her glass of Riesling White Wine. Standing at4’9 weighing, 120 lbs., skin tone a golden brown, hair cut into an inverted bob that revealed strongcheekbones and dazzling brown eyes. Setting the glass on the edge of the balcony shepicked up the Cohiba cigar filled with the greenestlime Kush with orange speckles the country had tooffer placed it between her full sensual lips lit it andpulled. Holding the potent smoke in for severalseconds she let it marinate in her lungs beforeclosing her eyes and slowly blowing it out. Settingthe Cohiba back into the ashtray she looked down ather hands. The fresh manicure she had no longer 2
  3. 3. Vigilante for Hirelooked fresh. On her left hand on her ring finger anail was chipped. On her right hand the fingernailpolish on several fingers was chipped. She rubbedher right hand feverishly trying to remove the driedup blood.“Shit was supposed to be different this time Viv,damn.” She said aloud as she stepped back into theroom stepping over the body that lay on the floor.Vivian was her sister; second to oldest it was threeof them. Vivian had been the middle child, she wasthe baby and Tracie was the oldest of the three. Shewent into survivor mode that’s what she had beentrained for since a child. Walking through the room and ridding the roomof any fingerprints she may have left she rummagedthrough the dead man’s pockets and removed awallet and a switchblade. Opening the wallet shefound a phony drivers license said his name wasDion Lefevre and he lived in Paris. Could of beenreal for all she knew the man that she’d known asAlanzo DeLuca could of been a fake name nevercould tell in this business. The other items in thewallet were $500.00 American all in small bills,$500.00 in Euro, and a sim card. Dropping the itemsinto her Precious Rose Bag a designer purse madein the shape of a perfect flower, the bag is madewith 1,016 diamonds totaling 42.56 carats, 1,169 3
  4. 4. Vigilante for Hirepink sapphires and 800 tourmaline’s retail $92,000when she saw it she just knew she had to have it.Standing erect she grabbed the handle to her Tumiluggage and wheeled it towards the door. Stoppingat the door she ducked into the bathroom and closedthe door when she heard someone slide theelectronic room key in. Forgetting all about the knife in her purse, sheclutched the same weapon she had used only hoursago to kill Alanzo, a bloody shoelace from amilitary boot. She held her breath as she thoughtabout the actions that had taken her to where shewas now from FBI agent to felon all in one week. _____________________________________ Sitting at her desk in the San Francisco FieldOffice Danielle scanned through emails, mostlyjunk mail she paused and thought about theaccomplishments she’d made in such a shortamount of time. Only a 21 yr. old and 2nd incommand of the white-collar Crime Program,National Foreign Intelligence Program andTerrorism Program. She’d always been an overachiever. Home schooled by her father since shewas 9 years old. She excelled in Math, Science, andEnglish Comprehension. At the age of 12 shecommuted back and forth from Shreveport, LA 4
  5. 5. Vigilante for Hirewhere she lived with her father and two sisters toattend school at Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology after testing out of high school with a5.0. Her father had entrusted her with an AuntNellie. No relation an old comrade of her father’sduring the war days back when he was an enlistedman. Danielle smiled she missed Aunt Nellie. Scrolling down further into her emails there wasan email that stuck out in her spam, it was anadvertising for the San Francisco Black FilmFestival sent by Auntie Nellie saying she was onlyin town for a couple of days and wanted her to joinher. Said to wear something nice she was bringing aman for her his name was Leroy Terrance Gregory.Danielle deleted the message, logged off andheaded for the door. Twenty minutes later she drove throughNihonmachi, also known as Japan town, the JapanCenter, and Little Osaka, a neighborhood of theWestern Addition roughly within the confines ofSutter Street to the north, Geary Street to the south,Fillmore to the west, and Laguna to the east.Heading down Geary Boulevard towards theFillmore Theater she parked checked her glock 23and exited the vehicle. 5
  6. 6. Vigilante for Hire She didn’t know to feel excited or nervous shehadn’t seen him in so long but for him to come outin the open it had to be serious. Her father wanted tomeet her there Aunt Nellie wouldn’t be there andthere was no Leroy Terrance Gregory it wasmilitary code the first initial of every name spelledout the initials LTG short for Lieutenant General,Danielle was going to see her father. Walkingforward head held high she made it to the front doorof the Fillmore and purchased a ticket. Making herway to the bar she ordered a shot of BombaySapphire.“Drinking on the clock Special Agent Irvin?” Trying not to appear surprised that she’d let himget the drop on her she downed her drink ignoringthe remark and moved towards the theater. Hefollowed behind quickly stepping ahead of heropening the door and holding it. He followed andsat next to her and speaking in a whispered tone sheasked,“What is it lieutenant?”A bristly shaven man with dark eyes and a jaggedjaw bone in his early fifties sporting a posh dark 6
  7. 7. Vigilante for Hirecolored Valentino suit leaned into her ear andspoke,“It’s your sister.”He smelled of Clive Christian No. 1. She smiled sheloved that scent she’d gotten it as a Christmas giftlast year.“Let me guess Vivian again.”“I would’ve gone myself but.”“What is it lieutenant she disappears all the timeprancing from one country to the next with anotherget rich quick scheme I don’t have time…”He cut her off mid-sentence. “It’s more to it thistime Danni.” That’s what he called her, what theyall called her since she was old enough to walk.“Where is she this time lieutenant? Greece, Japan,Seychelles? Lieutenant General just growled from frustration, the three sisters had been virtually nemesis theirwhole lives and now was not the time although he 7
  8. 8. Vigilante for Hireknew Danielle wasn’t all-wrong. “She’s inCologne.”“Germany?”“Been there for a while now managing some girlgroup out of New Zealand call themselves the WetPussies, she’s been more stable.”“Jeez lieutenant the wet who? Thats kind of crassisnt it?”“Dont look at me it was your sisters idea.”“Well if shes more stable what’s the issue then?”“Hadn’t heard from her in a while so I contacted thelocal hospitals and morgues.”“Straight to the hospitals and morgues? No friendsor boyfriends? What about any of the bandmembers?”“She was seeing a guy, can’t find him on the radarthrough my usual connections no known BirthCertificate, Social, or any signs of birth parents orrelatives.” 8
  9. 9. Vigilante for Hire“Off the grid, think he’s a sleeper?”“Afraid so if he is Vivian has to know, she’s beenraised to detect em since she could crawl.”“What do you want me to do lieutenant? I juststarted with the bureau I have a lot on my plate.”“Maybe use some of those bureau connections youhave or if worst comes to worst fly out and see foryour self what it is.”“I don’t know it all seems a bit much so what if sheis seeing a player how bad can it be?”“Maybe your right, I shouldn’t have asked you Imean she is your sister and all but she’s not yourresponsibility I’ll go. I’ll be in touch.” He stood toleave. She grabbed his arm.“Wait, I’ll check around.”“You don’t have too.”“Sure I do, she’s my sister...an irresponsible, inconsiderate bitch at times but my sister all thesame. Besides its too risky for you.” 9
  10. 10. Vigilante for Hire“What? Fuck Interpol.” The lieutenant had spent the better years of hislife hiding in plain view. On the run from theUnited States Army for treason and murder Daniellenever questioned, he protests his innocence and thatwas enough for her. He’d been on the run since shewas a child raising her and her two sisters. He wason the FBI’s most wanted list and flagged in severalcountries.“Negative, why risk it if you don’t have too, I’ll go.You talk to Tracie?”“She hasn’t heard from her.”“I find out anything I’ll get in touch through theusual channels.”“Affirmative, you be safe out there Danni.”She placed her hand on the side of his face. “Youstay invisible lieutenant.” _____________________________________ Awaking from her daydream back in thebathroom she heard the assailant moving about the 10
  11. 11. Vigilante for Hireroom. Danielle eased the door open and crept upbehind the woman, pouncing on her from behindshe wrapped the shoelace around the intruder’sthroat and began to pull. The intruder struggled a bitbut after regaining her footing grabbed Danielle byher arm using her hips tossed Danielle over herhead sending her crashing down on top of thecorpse. Before she could regain her bearings theintruder pulled her P-89 and had it trained onDanielle.“Don’t move.”Danielle froze. Fists clenched holding on to thebloody shoelace. Teeth clenched she spoke.“Lower your weapon, Im a Special Agent with theUnited States FBI.” Weapon still trained on Danielle the intrudercocked back the hammer. “Being a bit overzealousarent we? Former Special Agent Irvin I doubt ifyoull get a heroes welcoming back to the bureaubeing that your number 3 on their internationalwatch list now.” 11
  12. 12. Vigilante for HireDanielle stood to her feet. Hearing herself beingreferred to as a former special agent made her skincrawl. “Who are you? Who sent you?”The woman lowered her weapon and placed it backinto her holster. “Field Commander Ellsworth.”Danielle stepped closer to the woman. “Aunt Nelliesent you?”“She has a team here said you may need somehelp.”“A team? What kind of team?” Danielle askednever wavering eye contact from the woman.“The Death Brigade.”“Youre kidding right?”“Do I look like Im kidding?"Danielle smirked. She cant be serious she thought.“Death Brigade? Thats kind of comic bookish isntit?”The woman smirked back. “I assure you formerSpecial Agent Irvin if a contract was being filled on 12
  13. 13. Vigilante for Hireyou by any member of the Brigade youd think itwas anything but comical.”“Yeah I bet.”Danielle responded with skepticism."So who are you? The head Brigadier?” Danielleasked sizing the woman up. She stood just as tall asDanielle, same golden brown skin, strong cheekbones, and brown eyes. She was a bit heavier thanDanielle, not fat more on the thick side. She hadmore curves and breasts than Danielle had. In herlate forties, as Danielles hair was short hers wasshoulder length, silver with blonde highlights.“Im the Lioness.”Danielle laughed. “Youve got to be kidding me?Where the cameras at? Kutcher come out themclosets I got to be getting Punkd! The Lioness?”“Pay attention former Special Agent Irvin. TheDeath Brigade was contracted by your aunt to getyou back state side safely.”“What the hell are you talking about?”“Theres a contract on your head.” 13
  14. 14. Vigilante for Hire"No, buy who?""Alanzos former business partner. Something abouta file. The bounty is five million dead, ten if yourbrought in alive."Danielle sat down on the bed. "Now I know thisisnt real, Aunt Nellie cant afford that why are youdoing this? Why not bring me in and collect thebounty yourselves?""As you know former Special Agent Irvin, in thisbusiness sometimes favors are more valuable thanmoney."Danielle was becoming agitated. "Cut it with theformer Special Agent Irvin routine alright?""Well your no longer employed by the bureau whatshould I call you?""How about Danielle, Lioness?""Danielle we have to move…hold on." Lionessspoke through the two way radio in her sleeve, listening through the ear piece connected. "Whatsyour ETA?" 14
  15. 15. Vigilante for HireThe Lioness moved towards the door motioning forDanielle to follow. "Send the Cleaner, have theBrigade meet us at rendezvous in 0-1800."Danielle hesitated still unsure if she should trust thestranger or not."Lets move it Irvin.""I told you its Danielle. And how do I know yournot working with Alanzos old team?""If I wanted you dead, you would be. Ive beenwatching you from the roof across the street with ascope I could of taken you out when you were onthe balcony drinking your wine. Lets move part ofmy teams down stairs waiting.""Wait, I dont have a gun."Lioness removed her firearm from the holsterspinning it in her hand so that the butt of the gunwas facing Danielle. Danielle took the weapon, stuffed it in the front of her pants and quicklyfollowed behind Lioness. 15
  16. 16. Vigilante for Hire"I want that back Irvin it was a Christmas gift."Lioness spat out never breaking stride as she madeher way to the hotels elevator. Stepping off the elevator and out of the hotel ontothe street Danielles eyes scanned east and Lionessscanned west. Walking half way down the block asthey turned the corner on A1 and headed towardsthe Queen Drive. A white Toyota Hiace pulled upand the back passenger door flew open. A man slidover to the other side of the back seat. "Get in." Before Danielle could react. Lioness snatchedopen the passenger door of the front seat andhopped in. As she closed the door Danielle hoppedin the back seat closing the door as the car jerkedoff into traffic."This is Wretched hell be your protector." Lionesssaid turning in her seat motioning towards the manseated next to Danielle. Wretched was bronzecolored with curly hair and dark eyes. A scar ranfrom underneath his bottom lip down to his chin. IfDanielle had to guess shed say he was Tunni."Nice to meet you Wretched, Im Danielle." Sheextended her hand to shake his. He ignored hergesture. 16
  17. 17. Vigilante for Hire"I know who you are."She lowered her hand. "So gentleman like." He turned his head and looked out the windowscanning for suspicious vehicles. "‫أول نعمل مجانا وانها‬‫فم الذكية. يجب أن تتحول الحمار في لفضله، وأتساءل كيف تفكر‬ ‫" ”.مثلللرجل الذي سيكون؟‬First we work for free andshe has a smart mouth. Should turn her ass in for thebounty, I wonder how gentleman like she thinksthat will be?" Wretched mumbled in Arabic. The driver laughed. Lioness shook her head andturned around in her seat. The sound of a hammerbeing cocked back took Wretched by surprise as helooked down and saw the barrel of the P89 pressedagainst his balls. Danielle spoke in Arabic,"،‫ليس مثل الرجل في كل شيء ، كيف كنت نوبة أنتقل إلى امرأة‬‫" “ ونرى كيف هي أخلق الخاص بعد ذلك؟‬Not gentlemanlike at all, how bout I turn you into a woman andsee how your manners are then?" Wretched held his arms up as he turned andlooked at Danielle defiantly. The driver lookingthrough the rear view mirror into the backseatlaughed. 17
  18. 18. Vigilante for Hire"Told you, you should of read the file on herWretched, shes fluent in five languages that weknow of." Lioness said never turning in her seat."Put it way, Irvin."Danielle cocked back the hammer into position ofsafety and sat the pistol on her lap. "Who are youMr. Driver man?""Me? They call me John Crawfish maam. Pleaseforgive me if I dont shake your hand on the countthat Im driving." John said laughing."Fuck you Crawfish." Wretched said laughing."Okay people stay alert." Lioness said lookingthrough her doors rear view mirror."Whats the exit plan?" Danielle asked tapping thebutt of her gun with her thumb."Nervous Irvin?" Wretched asked. Looking at heranxious movements."My nerves like a steel trap Wretched dont youworry bout me none." 18
  19. 19. Vigilante for Hire"0-1800 we meet the rest of the team at rendezvoustheyll have the proper documents for us welldiscuss the exit plan then." Lioness answeredcutting the two off before they got at it again."You say the rest of the team how many membersare there?""Including us three theres seven. Wretched herewas a bodyguard for Jacob Zuma when he was theDeputy President of South Africa, Homer Valdez, and a former assassin for the British government. He knows how to get next to people with outdetection more importantly he knows how to keepthem from you. You dont move until he moves, hesthe best at what he does hell get you state sidealive.""Homer Valdez? The Mexican drug lord?""The very same." Wretched answered cracking a slysmile.Lioness continued. "John Crawfish former narcoticsdetective for the Baton Rouge police department.Busted back down to patrolman for a drug raid gonebad. He quit did some freelance hits in Yonkers and 19
  20. 20. Vigilante for HireConnecticut until he was recruited by the DeathBrigade.""Whats your specialty Lioness?""Im the hunter, I feed the pride go out and get thejobs for us to eat.""The rest of the team?""We have the Cleaner, Sarafina, Vincent thePollack, and the Florist youll find out what they dowhen you meet them.""Whats the pricks name who put out the hit onme?"“Krv Merchant. Whats on that file?”“Krv? Blood Merchant, hes Croatian?”The Lioness didnt respond.Danielle sighed. “I dont know anything about afile.” 20
  21. 21. Vigilante for Hire“You know something hes not going to shell outten million big ones unless its something prettydamaging.”Danielle reclined in the backseat and closed hereyes. “I dont know anything.”Lioness didnt respond. They all rode in silence.Danielle thought about her first occurrence withAlanzo. _____________________________________ Day One Danielle stepped off the plane at theCologne/Bonn Airport. After going through airportsecurity she made her way to baggage claimgrabbed her bags then went over to pick up therental car she had waiting. Shed been here before had a former boyfriendwho lived here his name was Christof. He had aMasters in criminal psychology and dealt in stolenart. It had been some time since shed seen him.Luckily for her they ended on good terms. She 21
  22. 22. Vigilante for Hirewanted to move about the country with out usingany of her bureau connections he rented the car androom for her. After checking into the Dom Hotel located atDomkloster 2a, she showered, changed and went fordrinks at the Kuppers Brauhas a night club not farfrom the hotel. Standing at the bar wearing a blackspaghetti strap tank top with the words Daughter ofa Field Nigga and proud of it emblazoned acrossthe front in bold white letters, a pair of white shapefitting Citizens of Humanity Jeans that hugged herframe perfectly and a pair of beige and creamCoach Oliana sandals showing off her Frenchpedicure. She ordered a shot of Rachmaninoff andtook a seat in the back of the bar. The neo-soul sounds of Estelle came blaringthrough the speakers as the crowd of twenty yearold patrons made their way to the dance floor.Danielle sipped her drink and nodded her head asthe song went off and Lena Strangers “Taken By AStranger” came on after the Estelle joint. Thecrowd went wild."Excuse Me Miss Sie sind sehr attraktiv machenSie, wenn ich Sie mitmachen? "Excuse me miss you 22
  23. 23. Vigilante for Hireare quite attractive do you mind if I join you?" Thestranger asked in German."Leider bin ich auf jemanden warten.""Sorry Im waiting for some one." She replied backin German."Er muß ein sehr guter Mann für eine Frau soschön, wie Sie sich selbst allein zu warten ererschossen werden sollte, um sein." "He must be avery good man for a woman as beautiful as yourself to have to wait alone he should be shot.""Das ist sehr schmeichelhaft, äh, was ist IhrName?" "That is very flattering, uh what is yourname?""Verzeihen Sie meine Unhöflichkeit, mein Name istFabian und du bist?” "Pardon my rudeness I amFabian and you are?""Francesca, sprechen Sie Englisch?“ "Francesca,do you speak English?" she asked taking a sip fromher glass."Yes I do." Fabian answered in almost perfectEnglish. 23
  24. 24. Vigilante for Hire"Well Fabian perhaps some other time, I promise.""Ill hold you to that Madame Francesca." He bowed and made his way to a petite double Dbrunette standing near the bar. Fabian was quitehandsome but thats not what she was there for.Two drinks later just as she was prepared to give upon waiting and leave Isabella showed up at the barlooking lost. Danielle recognized the girl from hermyspace page she was one of the back up singersfor the Wet Pussies. Danielle waved the girl over asKanye Wests “All of the Lights” came on. Isabellabopped over singing. "That is my song." She satacross from Danielle."Isabella, Im Danielle.""Nice to meet you Danni, oh Im sorry thats justwhat Vivian called you.""Danni is fine, she spoke of me?""Yes quite often.""When was the last time you saw her?" 24
  25. 25. Vigilante for Hire"Its been a week now, which is really weird becausethis is so unlike her." This little girl didnt know my sister at all, theVivian that I knew would drop everything and be ona plane in a new continent at the drop of a dime.Danielle thought to herself as she swallowed theremainder of her drink. "I see. What about any ofthe other band members?""No ones heard anything, I have the keys to herapartment if youd like to go by and look around.""Lets go, are you driving?"Isabella stood from her seat. "Yes you can followme." They made their way from the bar out ontoSchönhauser Straße / Alteburger Straße. Climbinginto her car Danielle followed Isabellas solid blackBMW M3 convertible. It didnt take long to make itto Belgisches Viertel (Belgian Quarter). They rodepass the main rail way track which formed a ring. The Belgian Quarter sat between the track and thering. 25
  26. 26. Vigilante for Hire It appeared to be a somewhat peaceful area.Nestled amongst pubs, five minutes walk to thenightlife. Danielle pulled behind Isabella and gotout. She followed her into the building and downthe hall, Vivians apartment was on the first floor.Isabella placed the key into the lock and unlockedthe door. As she pushed the door open and walkedin Danielle held her breath, her body tensed up.Didnt know what to expect. Looking around the apartment it was a mixture ofbohemian/hip-hop/contemporary as the décor. Itlooked a mess. A picture of President and MichelleObama during his inauguration hung in the middleof the wall and on one side of the picture was apicture of Notorious B.I.G. sitting at a table playingpoker and on the other side was a picture of TupacShakur standing in a cotton field surrounded byslaves. Walking around the apartment. A BlackMahogany Ralph Lauren Mohair 100%, BelgiumWyland Sofa, She thumbed through her recordcollection. Surprised she still had them, from her DJdays. She had a stint when all she wanted to do wasDJ she got a few gigs at house parties andnightclubs but just like everything else in life rightwhen she was offered a job as an on air personality 26
  27. 27. Vigilante for Hirefor Q93 in New Orleans she left them hanging andquit, upped and moved to Hollywood said shewanted to pursuit her dreams of being ascreenwriter. That was the last Id heard from her.Danielle thought to herself. She made my way to her bedroom clothes andshoes were all over the place, the bed was unmade,a bottle of half drunken Sobieski Vodka sat on thedresser. Stepping over the clothes and nearing herlap top she accidentally stepped into a plate oflasagna in white sauce shed left on the floor.“Shit” Looking down, she had white sauce on theheel of her shoe. “What are you doing with the keysto her place?”“She gave them to me in case of an emergency.” She made her way over to her desk and picked upher laptop. Placing it underneath her arm and madeit back to the living room. “Tell me about herboyfriend.”“Alanzo Deluca a bit of a snob at times but youcould tell he was a gangster.“Was?” 27
  28. 28. Vigilante for Hire“Well he came around every so often in thebeginning and he had this aura about himself.”“Go on.”“He didnt talk much about how he made his moneyall we knew was that he had a lot of it and didntmind spending it on Vivian. Dont get me wrong hewas far from being a dumb man but he just didntstrike me as the college/business type if you knowwhat I mean?”She looked around the place one last time and madeher way to the door. “Can you get in touch withhim?”“You dont think he had anything to do with herdisappearance do you?”“I just want to meet him, thats all.”Out on the street, Danielle gave her the name of thehotel she was staying at and her cellular number.“You get in touch with Alanzo and have himcontact me okay?” 28
  29. 29. Vigilante for Hire“Ill do my best Danni, he hasnt been around sinceshe disappeared, he has a cafe on UnterFettenhennen 11 over in the Altstadt-Nordneighborhood that he owns Ill try there.”“Do your best.”“Take care.” She didnt respond. She opened the drivers doorclimbed in and threw the laptop on the passengerseat. Starting the car she turned on the GPS andentered the address to the hotel she was staying in.She needed to get back to the room and see whatViv had on her hard drive. She could of easilybroken the code that Viv more than likely had onher laptop but she was guessing what ever was onthere little Miss Wet Pussy didnt need to see. She pulled up to the light and stopped. A CargoMarketing Spedition truck pulls up to the light onthe opposite side of her, flashing his high beams heswerves in front of her blocking her path. The doorsslide open and three men jump out and began firing. She ducked as the bullets tore into the windshield. She shifted into reverse and hit the gas. Driving at80 mph in reverse she zig-zagged avoiding oncoming traffic. Glancing back ahead the men 29
  30. 30. Vigilante for Hirefollowed on foot chasing still firing. Slamming onthe brakes shifted back into drive and gunned ithead on towards the shooters hitting one knockinghim thirty-feet into the air. The other shooterjumped out of the way and kept firing. Doing a doughnut in the middle of the street andwas prepared to hit the second shooter when shesaw the truck approaching, the driver was hangingfrom the window shooting. Smashing the gas andtaking a sharp turn going off road into the woodsshe kept driving, turned off the lights and drove inthe dark hoping not to hit any deer or any otheranimals didnt know what was out there. The leftback side of the car wobbled, it was a flat. Shelooked back, saw the headlights of the truck stillfollowing. Riding on a rim she made a sharp right turnsplashing into a creek rode a few more feet and gotstuck. Smashed the gas, didnt budge. Anxiouslyshifted to reverse, didnt budge. Back to drive, stilldidnt move. Grabbed the laptop jumped out andran. Clutching the laptop she could hear the truckscreech to a stop and the doors open and close.Judging by the sounds of the footsteps behind therewere three maybe four people after her, it was hardto tell heart pounding , plus sticks, gravel and mud 30
  31. 31. Vigilante for Hireshe sloshed through made it hard to distinguish.Ducking behind a tree she listened. The sounds ofthe night filled the air crickets, birds, and squirrels.Footsteps crept through the woods. She held herbreath and listened, off to the distance the sound oftraffic, possibly a free way. Clutching the lap top she eased towards the soundof traffic. No longer able to hear the men after her,she sped up as the sound of cars became louder. Sheducked through some brush separating the woodsfrom road.“Hey, stop!” A voice from behind yelled out. Shenever looked back, just took off through the bushesrunning through traffic as cars swerved trying not tohit her. Almost to the other side of the free way sheheard bullets piercing the sides of cars near her. She crouched and continued running. Lookingback three men were dead on her heals firingsilenced weapons. A car window shattered in frontof her, she dropped the lap top as the womandriving the car face ripped open. She paused andducked. Looking back at the lap top on the ground, back at her pursuers, then back at the lap top. Theywere gaining on her she left the laptop jumped upand dashed towards a parked car, the driver watched 31
  32. 32. Vigilante for Hirein awe as she ran towards him. Just as she grabbedthe door prepared to snatch the man out and take hiscar her body involuntarily spun and smacked theground. She felt the burn in her shoulder as she scootedback towards a parked car leaning her back againstit to gain leverage to get to her feet. Her eyeswatered as she glanced down at the blood seepingfrom her shoulder. She braced herself to stand, looked up into the eyes of one of her attackers....hetook aim and fired. _____________________________________ She woke up to the sound of voices. She wasntbound to the bed. She had a bandage on hershoulder from where shed been shot and an I-V inher arm. She tried to get up but couldnt move. Sheattempted to speak but the words were barelyaudible and sounded slurred.“Whats wrong with me?” She said to herself as shefumbled with the I-V. As far as she could see it wasnt a hospital.Looking around the room it looked as if it was abasement, or an abandoned building maybe, reallycouldnt tell. The man and woman talking entered 32
  33. 33. Vigilante for Hirethe room and stood near the door, she could hearthem more clearly now but could not focus her eyesclearly.“I told you to get her to me, thats it, thats all!” Thewoman said.“And we did.” The man retorted.“Barely, this was a simple snatch and grab job andyou almost killed her.”“From what you told me about her I wasnt takingany chances so we went in hard.”“You didnt have to shoot her with live ammunition, you shot her with a tranquilizer to get her here, howcome you just didnt start out with tranqs?” He ignored her question. Judging from theaccents of the voices the man speaking wasdefinitely German, the woman American. But whatdid they want with me? She thought.“Help!” She mumbled as she felt herself dosingback to sleep. 33
  34. 34. Vigilante for Hire The man stepped near the bed and looked downat her. With him being closer his face became clear. He wore a tight fitting Amber Crombie and Fitchshirt his muscular arms and chest filling the shirtout. Black jeans, and sunglasses covering his face.Shoulder length dirty blonde hair, cheap cologneand cigarette smoke from his clothes filled hernostrils.“Shes awake?” The woman asked as she steppedcloser.“Shes barely coherent, in and out.”“Did you at least make the delivery, successfully?”“Affirmative.”“What medication do you have her on?”“Rohypnol”“You gave her a roofie?”“Calm down its an anesthetic, shell be fine.” 34
  35. 35. Vigilante for HireShe stepped closer to the bed and looked down intoher face. She touched her hand. “You damn wellbetter hope so.”Danielle squeezed her hand as she felt sleep fallingover her, she tried to speak. “Vivian?” _____________________________________ Day Two Jumping up from her sleep, she jumped from thebed to her feet and looked around the room, herhead spun as she sat back down. Looking about theroom her sense of awareness hit her dead on like anon coming train. She was back in her hotel room. She closed her eyes inhaling and exhaling quickly, pulled down the collar over the shoulder fromwhere she had been shot. She had to admit, it wasbandaged up nicely. The memories all cameflooding back. Isabella, the laptop, the car chase, being shot, and Vivian! Standing and pulling the shirt over her head anddropping it in the waste basket, made her way to therest room. Looking at her reflection in the bathroommirror, She looked like hell. Face was dirty andoily, hair matted and dirty. She removed the 35
  36. 36. Vigilante for Hirebandage and dropped it in the trash can. Staringintently at the scar through the bath room mirror ithad been sealed with liquid stitches. She removedher jeans and turned on the shower. It didnt takelong for the bathroom to fill with steam. She cameout of her panties and bra, closed the bathroom doorand climbed in. Letting the hot water rain down onher tired body she couldnt help but to wonder whatshe had gotten herself into, and if that really wasVivian she saw or a hallucination from the drugsthey pumped into her arm. Twenty minutes later she turned off the waterwrapped her hair in a towel and body in anothertowel. Just as she grabbed the doorknob she heardmovement in her room. Stepping away from thedoor she looked about the bathroom frantically forsomething to protect herself. Tucking the towelmore tightly she pulled the towel from her hair andlaid it on top of the sink. Picking up a fingernail file and moving quicklyshe used it to pop the top cap from the sinks faucethandles to reveal the screw she began unscrewingthe hot water handle, then the cold dropping themboth into the towel. Next making her way to theshower and doing the same with the handles fromthe shower. Once all of the handles were in the 36
  37. 37. Vigilante for Hiretowel she wrapped the towel around her hand, creptback to the door and continued listening. As far asshe could tell it was only one out there but she wasprepared for anything. Snatching the bathroom dooropen she rushed out screaming and swingingcatching the intruder off guard, his back was to hershe came down hard and fast across the back of hishead. Blood shot into the air as he dropped to hisknees, rolled over and pulled his fire arm. “Stop or Ill shoot!” He yelled. They both paused. “Christof?” “Danni what the hell is wrong with you?” Danielle dropped the towel, rushed to the bathroom and returned with a fresh towel. She droppedto her knees and placed the towel to the wound onthe back of his head. “Oh my God, Im so sorry.” “You should be, your lucky I didnt kill you.” 37
  38. 38. Vigilante for Hire “Wait a minute now, what the hell are you doingcreeping around my room uninvited?” “I aint seen you in I dont know how long justwanted to surprise you, thats all.” “You know I dont like surprises Christof.” Shesaid as she rose to her feet and began going throughher suitcase looking for something to wear. He stood. “I remember now.” He said with a lightchuckle looking at the bloodstained towel. “You should see a doctor.” She commented asshe grabbed her undergarments, a pair of baby phatjeans, and a gray MIT sweat shirt and returned tothe bathroom. He spoke through the door. “Ill be fine. You findout anything about your sister?” “Nothing pertinent yet.” “Whats nothing?” “Met with one of the band members last night shetold me about Alanzo Deluca, a guy Vivian was 38
  39. 39. Vigilante for Hireseeing. Says he owns a cafe, think I might check itout today see if anything turns up.” “De Luca huh?” She stepped out of the bathroom. “Yeah, heard ofem? Isabella says hes a gangster of some sort.” “Heard of em yeah, gangster no.” Walking over to her suitcase she grabbed her bagwith her hygienic items and removed a small bottleof lotion. Squeezing the tube and applying lotion tothe palm of her hand she began to rub the lotiontogether and oil her face. “So what about em?” “Alanzo De Luca, hes the nephew of a foreigndiplomat from his native Monaco. Heard hes into alot of bad things but far from a gangster.” “Can you get me a file on him?” “Look Danni what is this all about? Why dontyou call the local authorities and let them handlethis?” “Its not that simple anymore, I was attacked lastnight.” 39
  40. 40. Vigilante for Hire “What, what happened? Are you alright?” “Christof, Im fine just get me another car, a gun,and that file on De Luca.” “Fine Im going with you.” “Its not necessary.” She pulled a matching grayMIT baseball cap over her head. “Just get me what Ineed and meet me back here in an hour, with thestuff I asked for Ill fill you in then.” Christof stood at six feet even, curly hair, naturally dark olive colored skin, and piercing darkeyes, a muscular build. He looked better thanDanielle had remembered. He grabbed her by herarms and pulled her close. “I dont agree with whatyour doing. Just because hes not a gangster doesntmean hes not dangerous.” Danielle pulled away looking up into his eyes shefelt her knees get weak. “I can handle myself.” Christof removed his fire arm and handed it toDanielle. “Its a throw away.” She took the weapon, removed the clip, checkedit, cocked it back and placed it in her waist in the 40
  41. 41. Vigilante for Hiresmall of her back. “Thanks Christof dont be angrywith me I appreciate everything your doing but Ineed to handle this on my own its family business.” “Family huh?” Danielle dropped her head, Christof placed hishand underneath her chin, raising her face so thattheir eyes met. She pulled away, turning her facefrom his. She made her way to the door. “We have to talk about this Danni.” She paused at the door, with her back to him. “Iknow Christof, just not now.” A tear dropped fromher eye as she opened the door and left. _____________________________________ Twenty minutes later she pulled up to theAltstadt-Nord neighborhood where De Lucas cafewas located. She didnt know the name of the cafeso she would have to check them all. She could ofwaited for Isabella to get back with her but at thispoint she didnt know if she could trust her or not,she was the only person other than Christof thatknew she was in Germany. For all she knew shecould have been the one to set her up, then what 41
  42. 42. Vigilante for Hireabout Vivian? Danielle still had that on her mind. Her sensible side was telling her to get on a planeand go home, but something else kept pushing heron. A half an hour, four cafes later shed finallyfound a cafe that said they actually heard of AlanzoDe Luca. The cafe wasnt too small, wasnt too bighad a warm homely feel to it. A group of collegestudents sat off to the back of the restaurant pairedoff into couples boy-girl, boy-girl all talking andlaughing. A middle aged man sat at the counterreading the days newspaper called Aktiv. Eiskaffeeand Apple deutschen Schokoladenkuchen sat on thecounter in front of him. She sat a few chairs downfrom him at the counter. Six feet, six inches, warm brown eyes, a goldentan, with black hair cut neat and trim. He wore ababy face handsome enough to wear it was as if hesilently invited you to touch his face, touch his lips, chest and abs. Well not actually his abs, Daniellethought to herself as she imagined what he maylook like naked. He flashed a million dollar smilethat made Danielle giddy, she smiled back lettingout a school girl laugh. 42
  43. 43. Vigilante for Hire “Hallo” He said sporting a black silk button downshirt, matching slacks covered by an apron. “Hallo” She replied. “What can I get for you madam?” Danielle glanced down at the end of the counter.“Ill have what hes having.” “One apple German chocolate cake and one Icedcoffee.” “Danke” she replied. He left the counter andquickly returned with her drink and desert. Settingthem both on the counter in front of her. “Now what can I help you with?” He asked as hebegan wiping the counter and removing the dirtydishes the old man left behind. Picking up the fork and cutting down into thecake she looked up licking her lips before placingthe fork into her mouth. Chewing the small amountof cake she spoke. 43
  44. 44. Vigilante for Hire “Im looking for Alanzo De Luca hes supposedto be coming out to meet me one of your co-workers told him that Im here.” “And exactly who are you?” “Why? What business is that of yours?” “Im Alanzo De Luca.” Danielle had to stop herself from rolling her eyes. She mustered a small smile as she extended herhand. “Im Danielle Irvin, Vivians sister.” A look of surprise flashed across his face as hecame from around the counter hugging her andkissing her on both cheeks. “Well hello to you too.” Danielle said as shestood. “Oh I apologize its just that Ive heard so muchabout you.” “Wish I could say the same.” 44
  45. 45. Vigilante for Hire “So tell me what are you doing in Germany?Hows Vivian?” “You dont know?” “Why would I?” “You are her boyfriend arent you?” “Eh more or less.” Danielle sat back down, sipped her iced coffee.“More or less huh?” Alanzo didnt respond. “So Im guessing right now would be less am Icorrect?” “Dont get me wrong I love Vivian but betweenme and you she can be all over the place at times.” Danielle wanted to agree but kept it to herself shedidnt know this man to sit around with him anddown her sister. “You havent seen her?” “Last I heard she was going to the States forvacation.” 45
  46. 46. Vigilante for Hire “When was this?” “Maybe a week ago.” “Do you have a way to get in contact with her?” “Have you tried her cell phone?” Danielle ignored his question, of course shedialed her cell phone.“You sure that was the lastyou heard from her?” “Wish I could do more.” She sighed, reached into her pocket removed 13.8euros and placed it on the counter. “Danke.” Shereplied then exited the cafe. “Where to now?” She said to herself as she beganwalking. Nothing came to mind. She continuedstrolling unable to enjoy the beautiful scenery mindconcentrating on the past 24 hrs. Nothing madesense. There was no way she could determine ifAlanzo was lying or not. She hopped in a taxi andreturned to her hotel room. Shed made up her mindthat if Christof didnt have any thing pertinent onAlanzo that she would leave and go back home. Shewas almost hoping that he wasnt at the hotel then 46
  47. 47. Vigilante for Hireshe would leave altogether and go home. She knewhe wanted to talk and she didnt want to. She leanedback in her seat, closed her eyes, and rubbed herbelly. What was done was done she thought as sheopened her eyes to see the taxi pull up in front ofher hotel she paid her fare and climbed out. Walking into the hotel, entering the elevator sherode to the top floor and made her way to her room. “Good he not here.” She said to herself as shebegan throwing her belongings into her suitcase.Fifth-teen minutes later she was down in the lobby. When Christof walked in carrying a manila folder. “You were going to leave with out saying goodbye?” “Look Christof Im sorry I just...” “Cant talk about it right now, I know. Heres thefile you asked for.” He placed the file in her hand and turned to leave. She grabbed his arm and pulled him back. As heturned to face her he was met with a passionate kiss.He pushed her back. 47
  48. 48. Vigilante for Hire “Is this your answer for everything Danielle?” “Im sorry Christof, just forget about it. Ill callyou when I get home.” “Dont bother Danielle, you dont want to talk tome now like an adult when were face to face whyin the world would I want to talk when yourthousands of miles away?” She remained silent. He threw his hands in theair. “Have a safe trip.” He began walking. “Im sorry.” He didnt respond he kept walking as if she neverspoke. “Christof, wait.” He stopped mid stride and turned to face her. Shepulled her luggage to a near by sofa and sat. Hefollowed behind sitting next to her. “Sorry about what Danielle?” “Everything.” 48
  49. 49. Vigilante for Hire “Is that suppose to make it better?” “Its a start, just tell me Christof what is it thatyou want me to say?” “Ughh I want you to stop walking around herelike it never affected you, I want you to act like yougot a heart in that damn icebox of yours.” Danielle yelled back. “Ice box? Ice Box? Youknow what fuck you Christof you have no right, Imean no right to assume I dont feel anything.” “You let that be perfectly known, about my rightswhen you...” “Say it...” Christof lowered his head fighting back the tears. “You cant can you?” He remained silent. Danielle grabbed both hisarms. Looking into his face as the tears fell. “Just leave it alone Christof theres nothing eitherof us could do about it now. Just leave it alone, let itheal dont pull the scab off this scar.” 49
  50. 50. Vigilante for Hire He pushed her back, she stumbled he grabbed herby her neck. She swung and fought to break his griphe squeezed tighter. “YOU had no right!” He let go of his grippushing her to the couch. “Damn you Christof it was my body, mydecision!” “No damn you Danielle, your body our decision, our baby. And you killed our child with out everasking me how I felt.” “Because I knew you wouldnt think objectively.” “Objectively? Thats what our child was to you?An objective to decide upon? Are those the wordsof a warmhearted mother?” Tears flowed from Danielles face, salting herlips. “You know what Christof maybe your right, hearing you say that and what you really think ofme confirms it Im not cut out to be any onesmother....like it or not I made the right decision forboth of us. But you get to go on, but me.” Christof turned his back to her. She screamed. 50
  51. 51. Vigilante for Hire “Look at me DAMN IT!” He turned and faced her. I have to live with thisfor the rest of my life gnawing at me in the pit ofmy stomach, nagging me in my dreams and nomatter how much I drink....no matter how muchkush I smoke its always there in the back of mymind. So believe me Im sorry for you but you willnever, I mean never know how I feel and what I gothrough so dont you ever stand there and talk downon me like you presume to know how the hell Ifeel!” He folded his arms staring down at her eyesglossed over with frost. “Are we done here?” Danielle wiped her face, grabbed her luggage andwheeled it towards the door. “You have no idea.” As she stepped outside to flag down a taxi, shespotted the same man from the hospital that shot herand stitched up her shoulder. She froze in her tracksas she sub-consciously rubbed her shoulder whereshed been shot. Letting go of her luggage with fearetched in her face she turned to look back atChristof she had to warn him. She felt some one 51
  52. 52. Vigilante for Hiretouch her back, just as she turned to look. Her eyeswidened as she looked up into the mans face. Onlyit wasnt Christof it was Alanzo. She reached for thepiece Christof had given her as she turned back tothe man from the night before prepared to fire. Shewas pushed to the ground just as the shots rang out. “Get dooown!” Alanzo screamed out as heducked and began firing. They both scrambledtowards a nearby car that the valet driver wasgetting into. Alanzo snatched the man from the carand jumped in sliding over to the passengers seat.Danielle hopped in behind him and paused as thebullets ripped into the side of the car. “What the hell are you doing drive!” Alanzoyelled out as he ducked from the on coming gunfire. “Christof!” “Who?” “My friend Christof, I cant leave him!” “We have to go!” “I cant!” She yelled as she jumped out anddashed towards the door. Two other men advanced 52
  53. 53. Vigilante for Hireupon her firing as she made her way to the hotelentrance. Just as she was about to enter Christofstepped out firing. One guy spun from a shot to theshoulder. Danielle spun dropped to one knee andfired hitting the second guy in the chest. Alanzopulled up with the passenger door open. “Get in!” He yelled as the man from the nightbefore continued firing as he held his cover frombehind a parked car. Danielle leaps into the backseat as Christof stood over the hood firing. Hestopped to get in quickly scanning Danielle to see ifshed been shot. “Come on get in!” Danielle yelled as she caughteye contact with Christof for a brief second. Sheblinked her eyes, as his brains and blood splashedher face. Alanzo smashed the gas, Danielle jerkedand bounced around the back seat as Alanzo zigzag-zagged through traffic. Leaving the armed gunman, dead men in the streets, and on coming sirensbehind. “What now? What now? What now?” Daniellemuttered over and over again as she clutched thegun in the back seat. 53
  54. 54. Vigilante for Hire “We get in touch with my uncle hell now whatto....do” Alanzos head slumped to the side crashinginto the window as the car veered off to the rightsmashing into a parked car. Danielle screamed asher body jerked and bounced around the back seat.Body feeling banged up and sore she searched forher gun that slipped from her grasp on the floor.Sirens rang out in the distance. She stopped andlooked out the back window. No authorities in sightbut they were close. She decided to leave the gun,she climbed from the window of the passenger doorand made her way to Alanzos door. Pulling the door open she looked down and sawthat he was hit blood was pouring profusely. “Oh my God your hit, we have to get you to ahospital.” “No, no hospitals get me to the airport.” She began dragging him from the car as crowdsbegan to gather and stare. “Thats ridiculous youll never make it with outmedical attention.” 54
  55. 55. Vigilante for Hire “Danielle just listen to me, if we dont get out ofthis country now this scratch on my chest will bethe least of our worries.” She pulled him a few feet from the car as he heldhis chest from where hed been shot coughing all thewhile. Laying him down on the ground she ran backto the car and grabbed the gun Alanzo left on theseat. Checking the clip, she cocked it backapproached a woman sitting in a near by car gazingshoved the gun into her face and forced her from thecar. Hopping in she pulled up to Alanzo helped himinto the backseat and sped off. After driving for ten minutes she angled the rearview mirror so that it faced down into the back seatwhere she could see Alanzo. He was in and out. “Hey!” He didnt respond. “Hey De Luca!” “What?” He answered groggily. She pulled over. “What...what are you doing?” 55
  56. 56. Vigilante for Hire “We arent going any where until I get someanswers.” Alanzo struggled to sit up. “We dont have timefor this Im losing too much blood if we dont getmoving Im going to....” “Die? I know, so get to talking.” “This is serious!” “And Im not?” She turned the engine to the caroff. “Uhh....what....do....you want to know?” Heforced out in between breaths. “Where is my sister?” “I dont know.” “Wrong answer.” Danielle removed the key fromthe ignition and opened the car door. “You, cant....leave me here!” “Talk De Luca!” 56
  57. 57. Vigilante for Hire “Its the truth I dont know where she is but Iknow some one who does.” “Who?” “Thats all I say until...you get... me to theairport.” She put the key back into the ignition and turnedthe car on. Turning and looking back at Alanzossweat drenched face as he bled all over the backseat. “Even if I get you to the airport before you passout and die well never get pass airport security withyou in the shape your in.” He laughed. She pulled off. “Whats so funny?” “Silly girl, we wont bother with security I have aAirbus 380 with full staff and a 24 hr. on-callmedical physician awaiting our arrival. 58. 58. Vigilante for HireAlanzo from the backseat armed men rushed herwith their guns drawn and pointing at her. “Wait, wait, wait!” “Stand down, stand down!” He yelled out as theyall began holstering their weapons. “We have to get him on the plane!” Danielleyelled as she stepped back and one man grabbed hislegs and the other his arms rushing him onto theplane. She followed behind as the doors wereimmediately closed and the aircraft took off. Alanzo was rushed to rear room in the massiveaircraft. She was shown a room where she wasgiven a change of clothes and allowed to take ashower. She asked where they were being flown tobut no one answered. She felt it had gone on longenough she needed to contact her superiors and letthem know what had gone on in Germany. But just as her questions about their destination washeld from her she was also denied access to aphone. A hour had gone pass and she was told thatAlanzo would be out of surgery soon, he wouldhave all the answers she needed. She was told thatshe could tour the jet, so thats what she did. 58
