Progress CriteriaGoing Strong: Be awesome and make awesome digipaks which consider target audience, mise-en-scene, genre, and representation.Accelerating: Make a decent digipak front cover which is based on excellent planning and research, using some original photography.Revving Up: Make a crap digipak cover.
1.Pre-PlanningInvestigate how musicians promote themselves.O Text and image are very important to the branding of the artist. Pick an artist (it can be the one you have used for the video, or someone similar) and analyse the marketing campaign for their latest release.O Look at choice of font, colour and image and what they all connote. (This bit of research is important for both ancillary tasks.)
2.Fonts and stuffO In Photoshop, do a set of font tests for your digipak and advert. These should be consistent across the marketing package.
3.Digipak vs CD CaseO Research the difference between digipaks and CD cases.O Discuss why you think there is more value put on a digipak.O You will need to design a 6 panelled case (plus spines?). Come up with a list of things you are going to need to include in your promotional package.
4.You are all my little starsLook at how star image is used – see if you can come upwith a set of ‘rules’ for your digipak and advert.O You should have text and font rules.O You should have style rules.O You should have rules when photographing your ‘star’.O Consider logos or any other features that might involve branding.Your rules might be influenced by conventions of the genre.
5.Copying…O Choose an already existing digipak cover and copy it into your project folder in Photoshop. You will be copying everything you can (not design – we are doing this to make sure you don’t miss out any of the small details).
6.More research (Homework)O Investigate the how the sales of CDs have changed in the last five years. Look at how artists are now making most of their money.O Feel free to blog your findings.
7.This should already be done…But if not…O Do a flat plan of your digipak.O Work out the layout you want, and plan the type of photos you need to take of your star.
8. PhotographyO We are going to play with the SLR cameras now, so you can begin thinking about what snaps you are going to use.
