7.4 Causative Verbs

      Page 284
Get, persuade and
convince are followed
   by an object +
       infinitive.
 (These verbs are in
     Group #2.)
(Get is a verb with
   many different
meanings. In these
sentences, it means
    persuade.)
Carnegie persuaded
 wealthy people to
  give away their
      money.
You convinced me to
   help the poor.
They got us to
contribute to charity.
They got us to
contribute to charity.
After help +
     object, either the
   infinitive or the base
    form can be used.
 (This is the verb that is
all by itself in Group #4.)
Carnegie helped people
 to get an education.

 Some volunteers help
  kids learn to read.
Let someone do
    something =
Permit someone to do
     something
Permit is in Group #2.
 Let is in Group #3.
The government
permits you to deduct
 your contribution to
       charity.
The government lets
  you deduct your
contribution to charity.
The teacher doesn’t
permit us to talk during
        a test.
The teacher doesn’t
let us talk during a test.
The causative verb
make is in Group #3.
The causative verb
    make + object
 is in Group #3. It is
followed by the base
   form of the verb.
Sometimes
make = force:
No one can make you
   give to charity.
Sometimes make =
cause something to
     happen:
Volunteering my time
makes me feel good.
The causative verb
     have + object
 is in Group #3. It is
followed by the base
   form of the verb.
Have + object + base
   form of the verb
means to give a job or
  task to someone:
Public TV stations have
 volunteers answer the
   phones and make
       donations.
The teacher had us
write a composition
   about charity.
