How does this panel represent the mood
during the visit of Marjane’s mum?
Although Marjane
and her mum are
having a
conversation in
this panel (and in
many others),
many things are
left unsaid:
which, why &
what is the
effect?

Task: hunt for evidence
Find examples of Marjane and her
mother being close & examples of how
they are distant at the same time.
Try to look at both the verbal signs as
well as at what the drawings tell you

Changes in setting
• After her mum leaves, Marjane moves
house again.
• All these small changes in setting seem to
coincide with changes in Marjane’s
personality.
• For each of the following moves / new
places, write down what development we
can see in Marjane:
– From Zozo to the nuns’ boarding house
– From the nuns to Julie’s
– From Julie’s to the Wohngemeinshaft
– From the Wohngemeinshaft to Frau
Doctor Heller’s

Marjane’s first love(s)
• The chapters ‘Hide and Seek’ & ‘the Croissant’
describe Marjane’s first love affairs and broken
hearts. All of it is combined with the troubles
of life in foreign (increasingly racist) country
and culture clashes.
• To show your understanding of the content of
these chapters, write 3 or 4 ‘letters to an
agony aunt’ from Marjane’s perspective. For
inspiration you could read some love troubles
on: http://www.dearcupid.org/ or you can get a
face to write to on:
http://www.instantagonyaunt.com/
• Add a rationale to these letters in which you
explain your choices of content and language
for your letters in light of how you see Marjane
in this part of the novel.

Rounding off
• Looking at the chapters we
discussed once more, can you tell
me…
• …whether Marjane feels at home in
Austria?
• …whether Marjane will feel at home
in Iran now?
• …where you feel Marjane belongs in
the world?
Editor's Notes
Letting go of Iran and becoming more independent (but Iranian pov still very much there)
Becoming a teenager and discovering about sex (desire to not be Iranian)
Becoming more confident and wanting to fit in (connection to home, but accepting Western ideas and values)
Getting a boyfriend and wanting to be with someone to support her (not scared to be alone but wants a lover – Iranian values gone somewhat / feeling torn between Iran and her life here (p.217))
