TOURISM AND SUSTAINABLE USE Tourism Event at COP 12 • Meeting on Biodiversity and Tourism Development (12 October) as part of larger Business and Biodiversity Forum • 30 participants from 12 Parties • Participants included park managers, CBD National Focal Points, various tourism and conservation interests, NGOs, researchers, academics, and project managers and officials • Four discussion sessions including: • Panel 1 – Tourism Financing Protected Areas Systems • Panel 2 – Integrating biodiversity into the development of critical tourism and conservation hotspots: identifying criteria for priority-setting • Panel 3 – Biodiversity and the challenge of blue/green tourism development • Panel 4 – Tourism as an alternative livelihood for indigenous and local communities: threats and opportunities

TOURISM AND SUSTAINABLE USE Revision of CBD User’s Guide • Discussion on CBD Guidelines and the User’s Manual and proposals for the renewal of the latter: • Manual should reflect previous and existing material and initiatives • Be clear about the audience (local authorities) • Who will be the users? • Whose responsibility is it to implement the Guidelines? • Take into account practical issues that affect tourism development and the private sector • Give priority to improved communication and feedback • Facilitation of voluntary reporting on implementation of the Guidelines • Identify a small number of priority actions for CBD Parties to take • Invite a wider range of players to cooperate on biodiversity and tourism development
