Day by day India is becoming the center for the bone marrow transplant. The number of doctors and hospitals has gained required expertise and experience for the treatment of bone marrow transplant in India.

2. WHAT IS BONE
MARROW TRANSPLANT
Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue inside your bones that makes blood-
forming cells (blood stem cells). These cells turn into blood cells including:
White blood cells to fight infections.
Red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body.
Platelets to control bleeding.
Blood-forming cells are also found in the blood stream and the umbilical cord blood.
A bone marrow transplant (BMT), also called a stem cell transplant, is a procedure in
which diseased or damaged bone marrow cells are replaced with healthy ones.

3. WHAT ARE STEM CELLS
Stem cells are the foundation for every organ and tissue
in your body. There are many different types of stem
cells that come from different places in the body or are
formed at different times in our lives.
All stem cells can self-renew (make copies of themselves)
and differentiate (develop into more specialized cells).
Types of stem cells:-
Embryonic stem cells
Tissue-specific stem cells
Mesenchymal stem cells
Induced pluripotent stem cells
4. WHY NEED BONE MARROW
TRANSPLANT
Bone marrow transplants are performed when a person’s marrow isn’t working
properly. This could be due to chronic infections, disease, or cancer treatments.
Some reasons for a bone marrow transplant include:
Blood cancers like leukemia or lymphoma
Bone marrow diseases like aplastic anemia
Other immune system or genetic diseases like sickle cell disease
5. In BMT procedure, transplanting blood
stem cells, which travel to the bone
marrow where they produce new blood
cells and promote growth of new
marrow.
But, before transplant, chemotherapy,
radiation, or both may be given. This
may be done in 2 ways:
BONE MARROW
TRANSPLANT SURGERY
PROCEDURE
Ablative (myeloablative) treatment.
Reduced intensity treatment, also
called a mini transplant.

Transplant Types
There are mainly two type of
bone marrow transplants:
Autologous Bone Marrow
Transplant
It involve the use of a person’s
own stem cells. This type of
transplant isn’t always
available. It can only be used if
you have a healthy bone
marrow.
Allogeneic Bone Marrow
Transplant
It involve the use of cells from a
donor. The success of an
allogeneic transplant depends on
how closely the donor cells
match your own.
11. Bone Marrow Transplant
Performed
When your doctor thinks you’re ready, you’ll have the transplant. The procedure
is similar to a blood transfusion. Donor stem cells can be collected in two ways:
Bone marrow harvest:- During a bone marrow harvest, cells are collected from
both hipbones through a needle. You’re under anesthesia for this procedure,
meaning you’ll be asleep and free of any pain.
Leukapheresis:- First, the donor is given several days of shots to help stem cells
move from the bone marrow into the blood. During leukapheresis, blood is
removed from the donor through an IV line. The part of white blood cells that
contains stem cells is then separated in a machine and removed to be later given
to the recipient. The red blood cells are returned to the donor.

Transplant Cost,
Success & Recovery
The cost of bone marrow transplant in
India is very reasonable in comparison
to the costs in the US and Europe. The
cost of Bone Marrow Transplant in
India will be approx Rs. 19 Lakhs to Rs.
35 Lakhs.

Success & Recovery
The success of the bone marrow transplant
so as to determine whether the treatment
provided to the patient is effective or not.
The predicted rate of survival was 62
percent.
Typical recovery time for a bone marrow
transplant is about three months.
However, it may take up to a year for you
to recover fully.
