Introduction
✘ For the first time, in 1907, Maria Montessori
(1870-1952), Italian physician and medical
doctor introduced the new teaching method
and opened her school for institutionalized
children.
✘ She was the first female graduate of a medical
school in Italy.
4
The only language men ever
speak perfectly is the one they
learn in babyhood, when no
one can teach them anything!
Maria Montessori
5
What is Montessori Model?
✘ Montessori model is an approach to the
education of children. It is a way of looking at
and understanding children. It is a view of how
children develop and learn which has been
translated into a systematic method of
education based upon careful scientific study.
6
✘ Montessori belief that many of the problems of
children she was working with were
educational rather than medical
✘ In examining children, she felt that children
were not achieving their potential, because
education was not based upon science
7
I have studied the child. I have
taken what the child has given me
and experienced it and that is what
is called the Montessori method
Maria Montessori
8
Elements
✘ Some key elements of Montessori philosophy are;
1. Absorbent Mind
The absorbent mind is the sponge-like capacity to
absorb from the environment what is necessary to
create an individual from his or her specific culture.
9
Construct Adapt
2. Prepared Environment
There are generally six aspects, or principles, to the
prepared environment
10
Freedom
Structure
and Order
Beauty
Nature and
Reality
Social
Environment
Intellectual
Environment
3. Sensitive period
“Sensitive periods describe the pattern the child follows in
gaining knowledge of his environment while Absorbent
Mind explains the quality and process by which he
gathers this knowledge.”

Goals of Montessori Model
✘ Assist the child in his/her mental and physical
ability
✘ Allow children to have freedom coupled with
responsibility
✘ Create in the child the sense of independence,
self-discipline, concentration motivation and
sensitivity
✘ Educate the whole child, with activities and
lessons designed to promote the development
✘ Develop a positive attitude towards school and
learning
✘ Develop a healthy sense of self-confidence
✘ Awaken the child’s sense of imagination
✘ Help the child learn how to observe, question,
and explore ideas independently
✘ Provide a carefully planned, stimulating
environment
✘ Encourage the child’s desire for independence
and high-self esteem
✘ Help the child develop the kindness, courtesy,
and self-discipline
✘ Help children acquire a sense of common
humanity that binds peoples of all races and
cultures together
✘ Free the child to pursue knowledge and skills
✘ Encourage the child’s inherent love of learning
✘ Create a culture of consistency, order, and
empowerment
✘ Form extended habits of concentration,
initiative, and persistence
