  2. 2. Use vs. Integration Is there a difference? <ul><li>The debate is whether or not technology integration and technology use is the same thing. </li></ul><ul><li>How would you define technology use? </li></ul><ul><li>How would you define technology integration? </li></ul>

Technology Use <ul><li>Use implies simply that; the students engaged in the use of technology </li></ul><ul><li>Could be seen as using technology for the sake of using technology </li></ul><ul><li>Need in schools to help students prepare for the 21 st century (Wallis & Steptoe, 2006). </li></ul>
  4. 4. What does technology use look like? <ul><li>Computers available for student use. </li></ul><ul><li>Digital resources available </li></ul><ul><li>Technology use implies the physical use of technology, not the educational implications (Gahala, 2001) </li></ul>

Technology Integration <ul><li>Integration is used so that educational topics are supported and aided by the use of technology. </li></ul><ul><li>Integration is used to accomplish another educational goal (Leftwich, 2008) </li></ul><ul><li>Learning happens through integration because goals are established and students can reflect upon those goals (Unknown, 2008) </li></ul>

What does technology integration look like? <ul><li>Interactive white boards </li></ul><ul><li>Blogs </li></ul><ul><li>Podcasts </li></ul><ul><li>Classroom performance systems (Leftwich, 2008) </li></ul><ul><li>It looks like students using technological advances to further and support their education </li></ul>
  7. 7. Real Life Example <ul><li>Technology Use: Using a computer to create a PowerPoint </li></ul><ul><li>Technology Integration: Using a computer to create a PowerPoint presentation that is able to convey a meaningful message and be used in a class to achieve a learning objective. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Summary <ul><li>Technology integration and technology use are not the same </li></ul><ul><li>Technology use means that students are actually just using technology </li></ul><ul><li>Technology integration implies blending technology into a curriculum to give it purpose </li></ul>
