Huia chess rules
1. HUIA CHESS COMP RULES:
Time control:
Time limit will be 15 minutes a player, subject to change depending on number registered/ time
constraints.
The player who uses up all of their allotted time without a checkmate or stalemate occurring, loses.
Touch-move
Touch move is encouraged but will not be enforced.
‘Checking’ the King
No penalty for not saying ‘check’.
If a king is in check, and the player whose king it is makes a move which leaves his/her king in check,
he/she is to retract their move and get out of check. This is to be done on their time.
Castling
The king and rook involved in castling must not have previously moved.
The king may not currently be in check, nor may the king pass through or end up in a square that is
under attack by an enemy piece (though the rook is permitted to be under attack and to pass over
an attacked square).
En passant
A special pawn capture which can occur immediately after a player moves a pawn two squares
forward from its starting position and an enemy pawn could have captured it had it moved
only one square forward.
The opponent captures the just-moved pawn as if taking it "as it passes" through the first
square. En passant capture can only be done on the very next turn.
Stalemate/ draws
The game is automatically a draw if the player to move is not in check but has no legal move.
A draw automatically happens by ‘repetition of position’- if the same position occurs 3 times over
the course of a game.
What happens after a draw?
Due to our knockout format, a tiebreak blitz (3 minutes per side) will be conducted. The first player
to run out of time without a checkmate loses.
Disagreements
For any disagreement between both players, Andrew and Jacob have the final say in any disputes.
