There is a disturbance in the force. The increasing cost of employee ill health is spiralling out of control. Absence and presenteeism are currently costing the UK economy £29 billion per annum. These costs are unsustainable for many smaller businesses but many of them could be avoided if they focussed more on prevention rather than the cure. There is a mountain of research that proves the link between staff wellbeing and business performance. Morgan and Redwood in 2009 found that staff wellbeing is unquestionably linked to increased business performance. They found that well-led, team focussed businesses that invest in their people attract a higher calibre of talent and that healthy staff can deliver 20% more income than unhealthy staff. Evidence also shows that effective wellbeing programmes impact positively on the bottom line. Research carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers found that 81% of businesses surveyed reported a reduction in days lost through sickness absence as a consequence of wellness interventions.Whichever way you look at it, workplace wellbeing is quickly coming out of the shadows as a nice to have and becoming a critical business MUST DO.
I've often wondered what a Health and Wellbeing Programme would look like on the Death Star.
This presentation represents my own thoughts as to what the Emperor and Lord Vader could have done to create a happier , healthier work environment.

The Fit for Work scheme was well received by JMBMC Ltd and has had a positive effect on many of the employees
here.
I and two others here have also stopped smoking and we are all definitely taking more fruit on board as there is a
constant supply in the front office. Since engaging with the programme our company accident rate has fallen to
zero
Matt Shaw Head of Administration
Schluter Systems
Since engaging Fit For Work Team's Healthy Workplace Programme at least 10 per cent of our staff are now more
regularly active thanks to the introduction of flexi-time.
The majority of our staff take advantage of our weekly free fruit delivery, and our warehouse staff have even set
up a self-managed weigh-in and are generally more conscious about a healthier diet. Our staff have been
noticeably happier and more motivated, and as a result our staff retention has been 100 per cent during 2014, and
sickness absence for the company is below the national average
Stuart Kellock Owner
Label Apeel ltd
We now have hours lost to illness down to below 1per cent of all worked hours. Our staff turnover is very low and
just the general feeling of happiness is generally improved. Any business not making the most of this FREE service
has got to be stark raving bonkers or maybe do not care about their staff morale and performance.
Don’t take our word for it
8. Case Study

9. Can businesses really afford not to invest in the health and well-being of their
most valuable assets ?

Editor's Notes
Good morning. Delighted to be here and my thanks go to the Business4yew team for allowing me the opportunity to come and speak with you this morning.
My name is Andrew Harris and I work on behalf of the Fit for Work Team managing and delivering a fully funded government backed Healthy Workplaces Programme worth £4000. This means that any business in Leicestershire employing 4-250 staff can participate in the programme for free.
Now I’ve presented on the subject of workplace health and wellbeing on many occasions to many different audiences. Well today your hopefully in for a treat as I’m going to do something a little bit different that hopefully puts the message across in a more engaging way. This is the 1st time I’ve done this so it could be a spectacular success or a spectacular mess. So here we go………who remembers 1977?
Fully funded government back scheme worth £4000 to Leicestershire based SME’s (4-250)
Help businesses to provide opportunities that support and encourage people to access health promotion and health improvement interventions in the workplace.
Tailored approach to ensure sustainability
Working with around 70 businesses and we have provided health improvement opportunities to around 3000 people.
Funding until end of 2015
Growing up I was a massive Star Wars fan. Watching these films back today I often wonder if the Death Star would have been a more productive place to work if it had a Healthy Workplace Programme in place.
The Death Star had a crew of 265,675, as well as 52,276 gunners, 607,360 troops, 30,984 stormtroopers, 42,782 ship support staff, 180,216 pilots and support crew. That equates to 1,175,293 members of staff. If we take the latest CIPD sickness absence figures the Death Star lost nearly £71 million per year and that’s without factoring in staff turnover, accident and injury rates and presenteesim!
Training for Line Mangers. Especially Lord Vader. Poor old Captain Needa chocked to death for losing the Millennium Falcon. Lord Vader would have benefited from some anger management or at the very least a course on how to provide constructive feedback. Perhaps Lord Vader needed to be aware of the financial implications of eradicating a member of his team. Research by Oxford Economics estimates the cost of replacing a leaver could be £30,000
Offer Smoking Cessation Support- Judging by Lord Vader chronic breathing difficulties he was clearly a smoker. Latest research suggests that cigarette breaks cost employers £1,815 a year for each full-time worker who smokes. Around 20% of the UK adult population smoke. Based on that percentage smoking would have cost the Death Star £235,000 per annum
Promote healthy eating- I imagine that the food choices aboard the Death Star weren’t great and were perhaps akin to gruel like slop served in Dickens novels. Perhaps Fruity Fridays would have gone down a storm? Research by Vielife has shown that employees with poor nutrition are 15%less productive than those with better nutrition, 16 days of lost time per employee per year. . I like Eddie Izzards funny take on what he thinks might have gone on in the Death Star Canteen
Stop Micro Managing- Lord Vaders decision to oversee the construction of the 2nd Death Star, as well as deal with Luke Skywalkers assault on the first Death Star in A New Hope himself clearly shows a mis trust of his staff. Lord Vader would benefit from some training in how to delegate and prioritize workloads.
Boost Team Morale- By killing every Captain and Admiral who made one mistake, all Lord Vader did was create fear and constant turnover of leadership, not great for morale. The Emperor failed to understand that people are more productive when they are happy at work. Happy employees=healthy employees. The Happiness At Work Survey evidences that healthy employees take less days off sick, stay with you for longer and are more productive, putting in more discretionary effort
Further to Stuarts comments we were fortunate enough to take part in a live radio broadcast arranged by Radio Leicester in February. Here’s a short exert from that interview where Stuart talks about how the programme has benefited his business
We are currently working with over 70 Leicestershire based SME’s and have already provided health improvement opportunities to over 3000 people. 35,000 Leicestershire business are eligible to participate in this programme. The funding, whilst secured for 2015, isn’t going to be available forever. Its my mission to provide the programme to as many businesses as possible before that day comes. Many businesses try to raise this as a priority item on their business agenda and many of them try to launch and implement workplace health programmes but too often many if not all fail. I’ll leave you with these wise words from Master Yoda to ponder on…….
