Joseph McTernan, Preceptor
• Evaluate and outline areas to improve
treatments and prevention strategies for
vulnerable populations in the community.
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
is the primary cause of admission for the
highest users of medical services:
Caucasians and African Americans.
• Eliminating risk factors for COPD would
improve patient health and lower
unnecessary hospital visits.
• COPD is the 3rd largest cause of death in
the United States
• Smoking has been found to be the
greatest risk factor for COPD.
• Trinitas currently has a limited
smoking cessation partnership
through NJCHOICES.
• COPD is the diagnosis for half of the
top ten hospital users in the area.
• This disease accounts for 21% and
34% of Inpatient Admission and
Emergency Department diagnoses
respectively.
I would like to thank Joe McTernan, who is
the Senior Director for Community and
Clinical Services and also my preceptor, for
this opportunity. I would also like to thank
Lisa Liss for assisting me with the volunteer
process and for orienting me around the
hospital.

Demographic research
conducted on Elizabethport
area including high
prevalence areas of certain

Secondary research was
conducted on COPD, the
highest cause of hospital
admissions and compared
with previous research.
EVALUATION
• Smoking accounts for 80% of COPD
cases in the United States.
• 70% of smokers want to quit their
addiction.
• Smoking cessation resources have
been identified and future partnerships
should be looked into in order to reduce
COPD prevalence in the community.
